Asalha Puja Day is July 20. It is a Buddhist festival that occurs on the full moon of the eighth lunar month, which is usually in July. The holiday honors Buddha and commemorates his first sermon, as part of the Buddha Sangha's four noble truths. Traditions include listening to sermons and making donations to the temple.

Our Summer Reading community board is starting to fill up with leaves, mushrooms, flowers, and even unicorns! You can add your contribution when you finish your Summer Reading log.

July 16-17 is Ashura, the 10th day of the Islamic month of Muharram. For Sunni Muslims, Ashura marks the parting of the Red Sea by Moses and the salvation of the Israelites. It is also the day that Noah disembarked from the Ark, God forgave Adam and Joseph was released from prison. Traditions include a day of fasting followed by carnivals, special meals and bonfires. Ashure, or Noah's pudding, is a popular dessert to make, which symbolizes the celebratory meal Noah made when he came off the Ark.

For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a day of mourning as they commemorate the death of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad. Ashura is observed through mourning gatherings, processions and reenactments.
