Children don’t need to be entertained every moment of every day. They’re naturally curious, capable individuals who are driven to engage with their environment 🌱

In fact, when we rush to fill every quiet moment with activities or new sources of stimulation, we can unintentionally take away something important: the opportunity to discover, create, and explore on their own.

Instead of asking, “How can I keep my child busy?” try :
“What can I prepare so my child can engage independently?” ☀️

Setting up a space with open-ended materials, involving children in practical life activities like cooking or gardening, or simply allowing them time to observe, wonder, and follow their own interests teaches them more than prepared activities ever will.

Solving their own boredom and finding their own entertainment is part of how children develop their ability to self-direct and focus, both of which are important life skills for children to develop.

Welcome to our Elementary Schoolhouse (ages 6–9), where your child’s curiosity becomes confident learning! Enrollment is open now 🏫

Just as we believe Montessori style learning is essential in the early childhood years, it remains just as meaningful during the elementary years. Students choose meaningful work, build friendships, and grow independence through hands-on, individualized lessons — designed to meet them where they’re at developmentally. Questions become more complex, interests deepen, and children naturally seek greater independence and responsibility in a thriving environment where they can build upon their strengths.

Enrollment is now open. Join us and let the learning begin!

When adults remove themselves as the constant source of ideas, they give children space for boredom, repetition, and self-directed play 🎨

At first, it can feel like you’re neglecting something important, but what it’s really doing is stepping out of the habit of over-managing their play.

In Montessori-informed teaching, the adult is not the entertainer. The child is seen as inherently capable, especially when the environment is prepared and not overly directed.
You don’t jump in to “fix” boredom because that is where creativity thrives.

☀️ Allow boredom without rushing to solve it.
☀️ Create a prepared environment with open-ended materials.
☀️ Resist suggesting activities or “fixing” downtime.
☀️ Observe before intervening.
☀️ Trust repetition instead of constantly introducing new ideas.

What looks like “doing less” is actually making space for deeper focus, imagination, and independence to emerge over time.

NEW THIS SUMMER ☀️

We’re excited to announce the launch of the Buddy Program at Redmond Montessori! This summer, each Upper Toddler child will be paired with a caring Elementary buddy to explore, learn, and grow together through collaborative play, crafts, storytime, and outdoor adventures 🌻

Our buddy program fosters leadership, empathy, and teamwork as older students model kindness and younger friends gain confidence and a sense of belonging. From shared projects to daily adventures, these friendships light up our classroom and playground, helping every child shine.

We’re already having a great summer filled with lots of curiosity and daily discovery. We’re excited for the fun that’s ahead 💦

Independent play, limitless imagination 🚲

A child’s choice of toys, activities, and pace is a daily lesson in autonomy and independence. Social awareness comes naturally from self-directed play — anticipating others needs and having the opportunity to problem solve. With a teacher nearby, not directing their activity, curiosity turns into courage and imagination becomes planning, sequencing, freedom to explore, permission to make mistakes.

In Montessori, imagination and autonomy go hand in hand, shaping confident, capable learners 🧠
