I like to practice my improvisational ability from time to time. It develops freedom on the instrument—training the mind to think in real time, the hands to respond without doubt, and the ear to guide everything. It’s one of the purest forms of musical expression.

Here’s one in the key of C♯ minor. Hope you enjoy.

Song name: 👉 “Boléro” by Maurice Ravel

Performance by: Eli Newman first year student at Faezi Piano Academy

At its core, Boléro is built on relentless repetition—a single rhythmic pattern that continues unchanged from beginning to end. Later in life, its composer, Maurice Ravel, developed Primary progressive aphasia, a form of dementia. Because of this, some musicians and scholars have speculated that the work’s repetitive nature may reflect early signs of his neurological decline.

“La Valse d’Amélie” is one of the most iconic pieces from the soundtrack of the film Amélie, composed by Yann Tiersen. Unlike big cinematic scores, this piece is intentionally minimal, featuring a repetitive and light melody mixed with a looping waltz bass line.

Song name: 👉 Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27, No. 2 (“Sonata quasi una fantasia”)

Performance by Anita Wong
2 year student at Faezi Piano Academy

The second movement of the sonata commonly known as the “Moonlight Sonata” is often overshadowed by the intensity of its first and third movements. Yet it carries a light, cheerful character—almost like a fleeting moment of peace or a fond, distant memory.

Song name: 🎹 Chopin – Waltz in A Minor (B.150)

Performance by: Kaaren Samoudy
4 year student and Faezi Piano Academy

The Waltz in A Minor by Frédéric Chopin isn’t like his flashy, aristocratic waltzes meant for dancing in high society. This one feels deeply personal—almost like a private confession at the piano.
It was likely composed around 1843–1848, during the later part of Chopin’s life.
Unlike many of his works, it was never published while he was alive—it was discovered and published after his death in 1849.
