This is how we practice critical thinking with our middle school ELA students.

Using Six-Hat Thinking, students learn to go beyond:

“What happened?”

and begin asking:

⚪ What does the evidence tell me?
🔴 What emotions are present?
⚫ What problems or risks do I see?
🟡 What are the strengths or benefits?
🟢 What other possibilities can I imagine?
🔵 How can I organize my thinking and reach a conclusion?

The goal isn't to make reading more complicated.

It's to help students see that a strong reader doesn't just understand the text — a strong reader questions it, analyzes it, makes connections, considers perspectives, and explains their thinking.

And when students learn to think deeply, their writing becomes deeper too.

Read deeper. Think clearer. Write better.

🌟 SUMMER BATCH CONCLUDES! 🌟

What a wonderfully productive 3 months it has been! 💛📚

From our little Kindergarten readers to our Senior High students, every student worked hard, learned new skills, challenged themselves, and took important steps toward becoming stronger readers, better writers, and more confident learners. 🌱✨

Here’s a glimpse of what our students accomplished this summer:

📖 Kindergarten
From learning letter sounds and phonics to reading 4-sentence-per-page stories — and even beginning opinion writing!

✍️ Grade 3
Personal narrative writing + diving deeper into reading comprehension.

📝 Grade 4
Scaffolding creative writing, analyzing plot, writing dialogue, and mastering “Small Moment” writing.

📚 Grade 6
Literary analysis essay writing — breaking down themes and analyzing characters with evidence.

🎭 Grade 7
Comparing characters and developing literary analysis around characters facing adversity.

🔍 Grade 8
Archetypes, media exploration, critical thinking, contrasting articles, and debating.

🔥 Grade 9
Exploring Fahrenheit 451 through characterization, theme and socioeconomic perspectives.

📖 Grade 10 – Literary Analysis
Learning how to approach short stories, quizzes, prompts, and analysis with the goal of achieving 100%.

🎯 Grade 10 – SAT Preparation
Understanding SAT patterns, question types and domains, practicing timed questions, improving scores, English conventions, Craft & Structure, and much more.

🎓 Grade 12 / Senior High
SAT preparation, college essays, Common App, and getting ready for the next big step!

We are thrilled to celebrate this wonderful achievement on the Grade 6 ELA/Literacy MCAP Assessment! 🎉📚

With an impressive 783 overall score, he earned Performance Level 4 – Distinguished Learner! 🏆✨

His strong performance in both Reading (60) and Writing (51) is truly commendable. Even more encouraging, his overall score is well above the school, district, and state averages.

This achievement reflects what consistent effort, focused learning, and dedication can accomplish. ❤️

As teachers, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing students grow in confidence, strengthen their skills, and achieve beyond expectations.

🌟 Teaching literary analysis is so much more than teaching students to write an essay. 🌟

My Grade 6 student is learning how to write a literary analysis essay, and this is what our lessons look like.

We don't just correct grammar or rewrite sentences.

Instead, we work together to:
✍️ Dig deeper into ideas
📖 Develop stronger analysis
💡 Write with greater clarity
🎯 Use formal academic language
📝 Craft a focused thesis statement
🔍 Support ideas with meaningful evidence
📚 Understand what the author is trying to communicate

The red annotations in this draft aren't corrections—they're conversations. They guide the student to think more deeply, organize ideas more effectively, and express those ideas with confidence.

One of my favorite parts of teaching is helping students realize that good writing isn't about using big words—it's about communicating ideas clearly and thoughtfully.

Middle school is where students begin moving from simply telling what happened in a story to analyzing why it happened and how the author develops meaning. That transition takes patience, practice, and personalized guidance.

Watching students grow into confident, analytical writers is incredibly rewarding.

🌟 From Average Essays to Strong Arguments – This Is What Personalized Teaching Can Do! 🌟

Every parent wants their child to become a confident writer.

But confidence doesn't happen overnight. It comes from the right guidance, personalized feedback, and consistent practice.

This summer, one of my middle-grade students worked on argumentative writing. When we started, the essay had a basic structure, limited analysis, and weak organization.

Week by week, we focused on:
✏️ Writing engaging introductions
📚 Developing strong thesis statements
💡 Finding relevant evidence
🧠 Explaining evidence with deeper analysis
📝 Organizing ideas logically
🔗 Using effective transitions
🎯 Writing powerful conclusions
⚖️ Addressing counterarguments

The result?

✨ A well-structured argumentative essay with stronger critical thinking, academic vocabulary, and clear reasoning.

This transformation wasn't achieved by memorizing templates. It happened because every lesson was personalized to the student's strengths and learning gaps.

From "telling the whole day" to writing a focused Small Moment!

One of my upcoming Grade 3 students from CA state made incredible progress during our Summer Writing Camp.

Before instruction, the student wrote about an entire day at the pool. The piece jumped from swimming, to almost drowning, to the hot tub, to taking a shower, and finally going home. While the ideas were exciting, they were spread across too many events, making it difficult for the reader to truly experience any one moment.

After learning the Small Moment strategy, the student's writing transformed completely!

Instead of summarizing an entire day, the student zoomed in on one exciting event—racing a surfboard with a sibling. The revised piece included:
✔ A strong hook
✔ Sensory details that helped the reader visualize the scene
✔ Natural dialogue
✔ Clear beginning, middle, and ending
✔ A meaningful reflection
✔ A focused storyline that stayed on one memorable moment

This is exactly what effective writing instruction should do—not just improve grammar, but teach students how to think like authors.

Watching students discover how to "zoom in" on one moment instead of "zooming through" an entire day is one of my favorite parts of teaching writing.

Small changes in strategy can lead to huge growth in confidence and writing quality!

UNDERSTANDING SAT SCORE MODULES

The Digital SAT is adaptive, which means your performance in Module 1 determines the difficulty of Module 2. Many students and parents misunderstand this, so here's a simple explanation.

How Module 1 Works

Every student begins with the same Module 1.

This module contains a mix of:
• Easy questions
• Medium questions
• Hard questions

The College Board uses your overall performance in Module 1—not just the number of correct answers—to determine which version of Module 2 you receive.

What Happens After Module 1?

There are two possible Module 2s.

Harder Module 2
• Given to students who perform well on Module 1.
• Contains more difficult questions.
• Offers the opportunity to earn the highest Reading & Writing score (up to 800).

Easier Module 2
• Given to students who struggle more in Module 1.
• Contains fewer difficult questions.
• The maximum possible score is generally lower because there are fewer high-value questions.

Does One Wrong Answer Mean an Easier Module?

No.

The SAT does not use a simple cutoff, such as "miss three questions."

Instead, it considers:
• How many questions you answered correctly.
• Which questions you missed.
• The difficulty level of those questions.
• Your overall performance pattern.

For example:

Student A
• Misses four difficult questions but answers nearly all easy and medium questions correctly.
• May still receive the harder Module 2.

Student B
• Misses several easy and medium questions.
• Is more likely to receive the easier Module 2.

Why Module 1 Is So Important

Module 1 acts like a gateway.

A strong Module 1 gives you access to the harder Module 2, where you have the opportunity to earn top SAT scores.

A weaker Module 1 places you in the easier Module 2, making it much harder to reach scores above approximately 650–700 in that section. (The exact score depends on the specific test form.)

How to Interpret Your Results

Module 1
• Easy: 7 correct, 2 incorrect
• Medium: 9 correct, 1 incorrect
• Hard: 5 correct, 2 incorrect, 1 unanswered

This is a strong Module 1 performance. Missing only one medium-level question suggests you likely qualified for the harder Module 2.

Module 2
• Easy: 1 correct
• Medium: 11 correct, 1 incorrect
• Hard: 10 correct, 4 incorrect

This pattern is actually encouraging. It indicates you were likely given the harder Module 2 because it contained many difficult questions. Missing some hard questions is expected—they are designed to distinguish higher-scoring students.

What This Means for Improvement

Instead of focusing only on your total score, analyze:
• Did I make careless mistakes on easy questions?
• Which grammar rules caused errors?
• Which reading question types gave me trouble?
• Were my mistakes in vocabulary, rhetoric, transitions, inference, or another skill?

Improving these specific areas is the fastest way to increase your SAT score.

A Tip I Share With My Students

Your goal in Module 1 isn't perfection—it's consistency.

Protect the easy and medium questions because they determine whether you receive the harder Module 2. Once you're in the harder module, every correct answer has the potential to significantly increase your score.

This is why, in my 1:1 SAT prep sessions, we spend as much time analyzing practice tests as we do taking them. Understanding why you missed a question is what leads to meaningful score improvement.

Today, we focused on:
📚 Writing complete sentences
💬 Correct dialogue punctuation
🧠 Adding thoughts and emotions to make stories more engaging
🔄 Revising and improving word choice
✨ Learning that great writing comes through editing and feedback

Every comment and suggestion is an opportunity to become a stronger writer. It's wonderful to see students learning that writing isn't about getting it perfect the first time—it's about thinking, revising, and growing with each draft.

Preparing over the summer helps students enter Grade 3 with greater confidence, stronger comprehension, and the skills needed to express their ideas clearly.
