Redlands Traditional Martial Arts

We’re about to go live with our Test of Spirit Training Day at Redlands Traditional Martial Arts.

This was meant to be our first workout of the year, and while it was postponed due to conflicts, today is about showing up and putting in the work together.

We’ll begin just after 10:00 AM.

The live feed will be broken up by activity and may run in segments of up to an hour at a time.

Today is not about corrections or detailed instruction.
It’s about training together.
Sweating together.
Pushing ourselves.
And leaving everything on the mat.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how knowledge is shared — and sometimes withheld — in the martial arts.
The masters who created the styles we practice today — Goju-ryu, Sh*to-ryu, Wado-ryu, and others — wrote books, shared openly, and passed on their knowledge to anyone who sought it out. Their goal wasn’t secrecy. It was preservation.
Somewhere along the way, many of us became cautious. Knowledge was kept close, accessible only under certain circumstances — in class, at a seminar, or within a closed circle. I understand why, but I’ve also seen the cost. Seniors in our systems can find themselves missing pieces of their own curriculum, even though they once had it. And I’ve asked myself: What if I forget? What if my techniques drift away?
For me, video became the answer. I recorded as much as I could — not because the recordings are perfect (they aren’t), but because they reflect my understanding in that moment. Until now, I’ve kept those recordings private.
But when knowledge is locked away, it can vanish in a single generation. When it’s shared, it can live on forever.
So I’ve made the decision to open up my channel. My videos may not be flawless, but they’re a contribution — a way to give back to the community that gave to me. Take what you find useful, and if you can, pay it forward by sharing what you have, too.

My son is finishing up his dissertation field study for his PhD at Michigan State University. To finish, he is in need of volunteers to complete a survey. The topic is occupational organization and requires both a person in a supervisory role and their subordinate to complete.

For this field study, he needs 150 participants. It would mean a lot to me if anyone in my networks could take the time to complete. Be aware, it will require some time for both you and your supervisor / subordinate. Also, please share with anyone you think would be willing to take the time.
