đź”´ Simpson Spotlight: Dr. Thomas Omwando

Two research papers from Simpson University’s engineering program earned Best Paper awards at the 2026 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dr. Thomas Omwando, chair of Simpson’s Engineering Department, co-authored one of the papers and submitted three papers to this year’s conference. Two were recognized as best paper in their divisions: Industrial Engineering and Engineering Economy.

The awards build on Omwando’s 2025 best-paper award in Industrial Engineering, bringing Simpson Engineering’s total to three ASEE division best-paper awards.

Bass Fishing with the Former Governor of Alaska Sean Parnell, Simpson University President Norm Hall, and wives Allison and Sandy!

Students Kaiden Dinning, Jaden Mah, and Brayden Santa had the fantastic opportunity to spend an evening at Bridge Bay on Shasta Lake with two fantastic leaders and their supportive spouses!

Former Governor Sean Parnell was the Key Note Speaker at this year’s annual Business Luncheon hosted by Simpson University, and he served as the perfect guest with Political Experience spanning back to 1997. Sean served as the 10th Governor of Alaska from 2009-2014 and then went on to be the 12th Chancellor at the University of Alaska- Anchorage until May 2025. His service has been long standing and wide spread, and his insight was much appreciated!

Hearing the stories from Sean & Sandy were a blast, and being able to showcase Shasta Lake and our program was a special opportunity. Dr. Hall brought in the Big Fish of the Day with a beautiful spotted bass, and Sandy took the first fish of the day!

Our students are blessed to have a platform to grow and learn from individuals like the ones pictured above. We hope that the trip was as memorable for them as it was for us!

Simpson University Earns Highest National Rankings in Recent History

Simpson University has earned recognition in five categories in the latest U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges rankings, including No. 4 in the West for Best Colleges for Veterans.

Simpson also ranked:
• No. 7 for Best Value School in the West
• No. 14 (tie) for Best Private College in the West
• No. 15 for Top Performers on Social Mobility
• No. 18 (tie) for Best Regional College in the West

The recognition comes as Simpson prepares to open the new Maurice & Marianne Johannessen Veterans Success Center, expanding support for the university’s veteran and military-connected students.
