From engineering challenges and outdoor games, to mochi, cannonball competitions and a week-long mystery, our campers packed an entire summer into one AWESOME week. Here’s a quick glimpse!

This year, the entire camp was run by high schoolers as a fundraiser for their fall trip to DC!

Three years ago, I sat in the audience at our very first learner-led play and I was changed forever. Learner-led means they do everything-- from casting to choreography, directing to set-building, lights, costumes, backstage and props. This is not to mention the year-long planning, collaboration, budgeting, and communication that the production committee undertakes.

It is simply mind-blowing what young people are capable of when adults get out of the way.

Every year since, the learner-led play has become one of the most emotional and inspiring nights of our year at Acton. Because what you see on stage is so much bigger than a performance — it’s courage, growth, teamwork, ownership, creativity, confidence and transformation unfolding right in front of you.

This Friday, our learners take the stage again to perform The Greatest Showman.

Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, friend, or someone simply curious about what learner-driven education can look like… come experience it for yourself and be inspired. All are welcome.

For over 30 years, Professor Jabari Mahiri, Brinton Endowed Chair of Urban Education at the University of California, Berkeley, has been at the forefront of identifying and investigating paradigm-shifting pedagogy and praxis. Upon learning about Acton Academy Redding, Prof. Mahiri brought his research team for a week to observe, document, and better understand what becomes possible in a truly learner-led environment.

What they encountered challenges conventional assumptions about classroom management, control, and order in K12 education. In place of compliance-driven structures, they witnessed a community grounded in agency, accountability, and shared responsibility—where social and emotional learning (SEL) is not an add-on, but the foundation. Their work explores how SEL is cultivated not through prescriptive programs, but through lived practice—within a functioning beloved community where learners develop empathy, self-regulation, collaboration, and purpose in real time.

We are incredibly honored to have this work recognized and explored by expert educators. Their research helps illuminate the depth, rigor and transformative potential of learner-driven models like Acton. We look forward to the insight and findings they'll publish for the broader education community. 🙌🏼
