It was once the home of our founder, actress Carmen Mathews, and it is an outstanding outdoor classroom. We have a variety of habitats for our environmental programs including woodlands, wetlands, and pastures.

The evening walk to pasture is one of the highlights of the day for our cows. During the heat of the day, they relax in the barn where fans keep them cool and comfortable. As the sun begins to set and temperatures drop, it’s time for them to head out to pasture.

The cows spend the night grazing on fresh grass, stretching their legs, and filling up on the nutrients they need. By morning, you’ll often find them resting comfortably, chewing their cud and digesting all that delicious forage from the night before.

If you’re visiting the farm, keep an eye out around 4:00 PM when the herd heads out for the evening. With several pastures around the property, you never know where they’ll be spending the night, but finding them is part of the fun!

Summer is just beginning which means it's the perfect time to start thinking about the first annual Hayfield Hustle at New Pond Farm!

Whether you choose the 5k or the 5 mile, your run will take you past the glorious hayfields that sustain our cows and bring you the tastiest milk in all of Connecticut. For the kiddos there's the Children's Sap Run, a fun untimed romp through the farm.

Just a heads up for tomorrow!

The driveways to the Dairy will be closed as we welcome a student from Sacred Heart University who will be filming scenes for her thesis project near the farmhouse.

We kindly ask our milk customers and farm visitors to park in the Education Center parking lot and walk through the barn to access the Dairy. Please be mindful of the student filmmakers and their crew as they work to bring their creative vision to life.

We’re excited to be part of this collaboration and grateful for the opportunity to support a student project right here at the farm!

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience. On the bright side, there will be plenty of chocolate milk waiting for you!

🌾Farm Friday🌾

Next on our journey through the hay field is another legume, bird’s foot trefoil!

Birdsfoot trefoil is a protein-rich legume, often containing around 15–20% crude protein, making it an excellent forage for dairy and beef cattle. Protein is essential for growth, body maintenance, and milk production, which makes plants like trefoil an important part of a cow’s diet.

You can recognize birdsfoot trefoil by its clusters of bright yellow flowers that bloom throughout the summer. Once the flowers fade, the plant forms thin seed pods that spread out from one point, resembling a bird’s foot, which is exactly how it got its name!

What makes birdsfoot trefoil especially unique is its tannins. Tannins are naturally occurring plant compounds that can help cows utilize protein more efficiently in the rumen rather than losing it during digestion. These tannins may also help reduce the risk of bloat, a digestive issue that can sometimes occur when cattle graze rich legumes.

Beyond feeding the cows, trefoil helps feed the soil too! As a legume, it naturally pulls nitrogen from the air and returns it to the ground, helping improve soil health and reducing the need for fertilizers.

An exciting morning on the farm! We watched a protective hen and her poults come face to face with a few puffed up tom turkeys. Before they crossed paths, she had all of her babies tucked safely beneath her wings, doing her best to keep them protected from the curious toms.

So far, we’ve spotted one hen with 11 poults and another with 7! Wild turkey moms do an incredible job raising their young, keeping them hidden in tall grass and underbrush while they learn to forage and stay safe from predators.

Next time you’re visiting the farm, keep your eyes on the edges of the fields and the tall grass, you just might catch a glimpse of some adorable little turkey poults sneaking through the greenery!

And just like that first cutting hay is in the barn, and in record time!

Thanks to a dry stretch at the end of May and beginning of June, we were able to move quickly through our hay fields and put up an excellent crop. When it comes to making quality hay, the weather is the biggest factor, and this year Mother Nature was on our side. Plenty of sunshine, low humidity, and a steady breeze gave us ideal conditions for drying and baling hay at just the right time.

The result? Barns filled with high quality bales that will help keep our cows healthy, happy, and well fed all winter long.

Now it’s time to let those fields rest and regrow. With a little more sunshine and some timely rain, we’ll be looking forward to a lush and nutritious second cutting later this summer!

What a beautiful day for our chicks to check out the grass for the first time!
They are now old enough to spend some time in the fresh air during the day foraging for bugs and eating fresh grass. For their safety they will be locked up each night because they are still more vulnerable to the cold and predators.
Stop by to see them enjoying their new outdoor space!
