Snowy Plover chicks 😍🐥

Earlier this month, we banded our first Snowy Plover chicks of the season! Nesting had been delayed by the rain this spring, but it's picking up now! 🥹

It's also International Day for Biological Diversity, which is meant to increase awareness of biodiversity issues. The Pacific Coast population of the Western Snowy Plover is listed as threatened largely due to habitat loss, human disturbance, and predators. ​To help with the recovery of the population, we survey the salt ponds of the South SF Bay to monitor plovers, determine their fledging success, and track their movements. We also look out for predators and help enhance breeding habitat for these sensitive birds.

To help birds like these Snowy Plovers, remember to stay out of protected areas, keep pets leashed, and support organizations like SFBBO actively working to protect birds so we can share the earth with them!

Kids can look forward to sledding at the beach, rope swings in the river, tidepools, animal tracking, swimming, orienteering, team building games... Our Method:

With the main objective of getting children outside playing in nature with others, we emerse them in a variety of nature spots throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains and Santa Clara Valley. Though our pickup and drop off location stays the same, we transport our children to these magical places to and from the dropoff location at Wildwood park in Saratoga.

Each park has been selected to create an introduction to the outdoors and provide lots of opportunity for personal exploration and play in nature. We provide a safe space and teach the skills to play safely. While walking is involved, we are NOT strictly a hiking group. We strive to reach children where they are comfortable and provide a variety of ways to interact and learn about the outdoors. Our activities include tree climbing, rock scrambling, orienteering, animal tracking, wilderness survival skills, and water and imagination play.

With children's safety as the highest concern, Acorn Adventures strives to create and maintain a culture of curiosity, community, and inclusivity while we observe and learn about our local ecology.

Our goal is to develop a deeper relationship between students and the natural world by providing a safe place to explore through play, observation and story.
Throughout the year we will observe and celebrate the ever-changing seasonal events of nature’s calendar.

By understanding the patterns of the seasons, students will witness some of the most beautiful natural events on earth and observe examples of the ecological processes that allow life to flourish.
