Please join me in welcoming our newest teacher, Ari Bruhnkeschmidt! Ari will be taking over the Animal Adventures in Music program this summer and will also be teaching piano, banjo, ukulele, and many more instruments!

“Ari Bruhnkeschmidt earned her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 2022. She is also working on a Master’s degree in Music Education with an Orff-Schulwerk emphasis at University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis. Before joining the North Woods Music Studio Staff in 2025, Ari worked for three years as a preK-8 general music teacher in Goodhue, MN. Ari also owns her own studio in Plainview, MN! She teaches piano, guitar, ukulele, banjo, brass instruments, and beginning band instruments.
When she isn’t teaching, Ari loves spending time crocheting and knitting. She also enjoys spending time with her husband and their four pets; Lance, Lady, Lucas, and Leo. Lance and Lady are cats and Lucas and Leo are dogs.”

I first met Ari when we played in a pit orchestra together. Her energy and love of music was radiant. Our students will be so lucky to get to work with her! Welcome to the team, Ari!

Students of the Red Wing Area Home School Band performing with Dallas Brass.

What an unforgettable last couple of days! This week, a few of my private lesson students and the students of the Red Wing Area Home School Band that I direct were invited to be a part of concerts with Dallas Brass at the Sheldon Theatre. This was an incredible opportunity for them to not only perform with a professional group, but to rehearse and learn from professionals on their instruments! I am beyond proud of not only how hard these kids worked, but how respectful and appreciative they were throughout this whole experience.

Getting to share in making music and performing with my students is something that I don’t take for granted! I hope they had as good of a time as I did. I also have to make a special mention of the homeschool band students - they have been playing their instruments for SIX. MONTHS. They’ve worked so incredibly hard to learn their instruments and read their music. One comment I received from one of the members of Dallas Brass was how impressed he was at the comprehension of actual note reading. These kids put in so much outside practice time, and I am beyond blessed that they love playing in this band so much!

A HUGE thank you to Dallas Brass, Shantel Dow, Russel Johnson, Sheldon Theatre of Performing Arts, and the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band for giving my students this amazing opportunity!

I am beyond excited to introduce our NEW private lesson instructor, Derek Braend!

“Derek earned his Bachelors degree in Music from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire in 2024, where he studied classical guitar, jazz guitar, and bassoon. Derek is the primary guitar, bass, and woodwind teacher. He enjoys playing in musical pits, big bands, and orchestras. When he’s not teaching, Derek likes to read. He aims to read 50 books this year!”

Derek has a calm yet passionate energy about teaching music. His laid back demeanor is the perfect compliment to his desire for his students to play to the best of their abilities. He has a unique teaching style that we are so fortunate to have with us.

Animal Adventures in Music!🎵🐧🐯🦎🐝🐳🎵

So, what’s so special about Animal Adventures in Music?
This program - geared towards (but not limited to) ages 4-6 is a curriculum that introduces the language of music before a student is ready to sit down and learn a specific instrument. Working through 10 different levels (much like the martial arts belt system), students will encounter 10 animal friends, each with a different instrument. Students learn about these instruments, their families, and a BUNCH of music terms and notes along the way! After completing all 10 levels (approximately 2-3 years), students will have had the equivalent of a beginning college music theory course and will be ready to move on to whatever instrument they would like to learn to play - they will already know how to read music!
Oh, and did we mention that there are over 2,000 stickers AND after completing each level, students earn their very own medal? Nothing compares to the excitement our students have when they earn a new medal!😎.

It’s August, which means it is time to start thinking about activities for the school year! We are so excited to start seeing all of our students again on a weekly basis, and we want YOU to join us! Free concert on Wednesday! Come hear some great music and get an opportunity to watch your teacher play in a concert! If you come down, make sure to come say hi!

This Wednesday, June 26th, we'll be performing at the Red Wing Central Park Bandshell. 7 PM. Bring a lawn chair, relax and enjoy some really good brass band music. The weather is supposed to be...nice!
