We had a BLAST in our INK IT UP camp this week! 💥

Our young writers brainstormed a FOUR PAGE rough draft of a FOUR BOOK series of a dystopian tale! We had to create a Google document so that they could keep in touch and continue to add to the story throughout the year. ✍️

We are so inspired by these young writers and can't wait to read their tetralogy someday!

Experience the power of live, true, first-person storytelling at our next FIREFLY: Stories on Stage! 🎤

📅 Tuesday, August 18

📍 Two River Theater

Join us to hear real stories of joy, heartbreak, humor, struggle, and triumph—told by everyday people, on stage, in front of a live audience. No judges. Just community and connection.

We will have three featured storytellers as well as opportunities from the audience to throw your name into a hat.

Our second featured storyteller is ... Carmen Balentine!

Carmen Balentine is the Associate Director of Individual Giving at Two River Theater, where he has been part of the organization since 2012. What began as a job has grown into a meaningful career at a place he considers truly magical. He enjoys building relationships with patrons and helping connect people to the transformative power of live theater.

Outside of the theater, Carmen is an actor whose most recent role was Troy Maxson in Fences at Playhouse 22. He also co-leads the Metuchen Milers running club and serves on the Metuchen Arts Council. When he’s not on stage or on the trails, you’ll likely find him spinning vinyl records—especially Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Sade, or The Bee Gees. Whether it’s through theater, running, music, or community events, he loves creating opportunities for people to connect and enjoy life.

If you’d like to throw your name into the hat, come prepared with a true, five-minute story on the theme of FIRE. 🔥

Teen Writing Space at Back to Nature last night was inspiring as always! ✨

Teen leader Anansha ran our third class, where we had a deep discussion about book to screen adaptions. 📚🎬 Then we tried fan fiction—rewriting some of our favorite (or not so favorite) scenes. ✍️ We also used the store itself to inspire new works. 🔮 We ended with a Write Around where we wrote six collaborative stories together, one sentence at a time.

We can’t believe there’s only one class left. Time flies when you’re having fun! 🫶

We had a great time at Shore House last week! 💙

After a guided sound meditation, teen intern Sangbrita had us all become investigative journalists for the hour, where we picked through trinkets that she brought in and answered questions about them to create our own characters and plots.

One writer shared a piece he came up with about a witch creating a spell inspired by a candle holder. 🕯 Another shared a Whodunit-style piece inspired by a pair of glasses. 👓 And another shared a story about a dentist inspired by a candle wick trimmer that looked like it could be a dental tool. 🦷

Everyone had a blast creating stories to go with our found objects. We are so grateful to teen intern Sangbrita and look forward to welcoming her back for our next two sessions in August, as well!

Tuesday tip time from writing instructor Justin Javier ...

Almost every writer experiences writer's block at some point or another. Instead of letting it be a barrier, we can use writer's block to continue to move us forward. The challenge is to RENAME IT and RECLAIM IT. ✍️

Justin calls his writer's block "creative pause" and uses that time to reignite his creative spark by reading and seeking inspiration in community like our Community Playmaking workshop tonight at Asbury Park Public Library.

A look back 👀 at our community events this July ...

✍️ We explored the themes “Bee,” “Rock,” “Travel,” and “Extra” in Lunchtime Write-In.
✍️ Committed writers continued to meet on Zoom for Morning Pages.
✍️ We have been facilitating a weekly write-in for older adults at Parker Life.
✍️ We had so much fun at our PWN Teen Café Open Mic at The Art of the Bean and Leaf where we presented two incredible teen interns with a $500 scholarship from the Judith M. Chauhan “Make a Difference” Fund.
✍️ Our new teen interns are all off doing great work (teaching assistants, editorial assistants, and those participating in The Interview Project).
✍️ Teen intern Sangbrita had us all become investigative journalists when she led the group at Shore House.
✍️ We came back to Red Bank Regional High School for Summer Slam again this year with the help of three of our amazing teaching assistant interns.
✍️ We have been having so much fun at Back to Nature for Teen Writing Space where our teen leaders are taking turns running the group.
✍️ We had an absolute blast hosting an Ice Cream Writing Workshop as part of the Teen Arts NJ Youth Arts Initiative at Parlor Gallery.
✍️ We came together for another Asbury Park edition of Write Out Loud at Asbury Book Cooperative.
✍️ We kicked off our first Write Out Loud in Red Bank at Crazy Story Books.
✍️ We were thrilled to have Crazy Story Books as both our event space and our inspiration for our educator workshop, too.
