Another CFA® exam trivia question for CFA candidates.

An equity analyst derives the justified forward P/E for a company using the Gordon growth model: P/E = p/(r - g), where p = 60%, required return r = 9%, and dividend growth rate g = 5%.

The equity risk premium then rises by 200 basis points, increasing the required return to 11%. All other inputs remain unchanged.

The new justified forward P/E is closest to:

A. 15.0x, because the justified P/E is determined by the payout ratio and growth rate, neither of which has changed.
B. 12.0x, because the required return increase is partially absorbed by a proportional decline in the growth rate, leaving the denominator at 5% rather than 6%.
C. 10.0x, because the higher required return of 11% widens the denominator from 4% to 6%, compressing the justified P/E from 60%/4% = 15.0x to 60%/6% = 10.0x.

Another CFA® exam trivia question for CFA candidates.

An analyst runs a simple linear regression of monthly stock returns on market returns. The regression produces an R-squared of 0.64 and an F-statistic of 2.1 against a critical value of 3.9 at the 5% significance level.

Which of the following conclusions is most accurate?

A. The regression is statistically significant because R-squared of 0.64 indicates that 64% of the variation in stock returns is explained by market returns, which confirms a meaningful relationship at conventional significance levels.
B. The regression is not statistically significant and R-squared is irrelevant, because a low F-statistic always indicates that the independent variable has no linear relationship with the dependent variable under any conditions.
C. R-squared and the F-statistic lead to conflicting signals: R-squared of 0.64 appears economically meaningful, but the F-statistic of 2.1 falls below the critical value of 3.9, so the analyst cannot reject the null hypothesis that the slope coefficient equals zero and the regression is not statistically significant.
