Hey everyone! We're still here! I had a chance to search through a lady's collection today, and she was thrilled to know that there was treasure in her change. It is a blast to show people what they have in their collection. She came into the meeting with a desire to sell her collection, and she left with a desire to save at least some of it for her grandchildren.

It was a great day. Happy Labor Day!

Hey everyone:

Just a quick note to say that I am still available to help you sort through your old coins. I don't post here as much as when I started, mainly because this will never become a for-profit business. I do want to help as many folks as possible, though!

As I am a teacher and as this is summer, I have a little more free time, so if you've been waiting to get into that safety deposit box or safe to look though your coins, now is a great time. Contact me and let's set up a time to look through the treasure in your change!

Here's something to check out. It is a steel cent, minted during World War II. The US military needed all the copper it could get, so these cents were minted with a zinc-coated steel alloy. Pretty neat piece of our coin heritage!

In addition to being a coin nerd, I am also a preacher. I had the opportunity to use one of my coins as a sermon illustration tonight. It is a 1925 Peace dollar that once belonged to my great-grandfather.

My text came from the book of Proverbs. Proverbs 2:1-5 (ESV) describes how God wants people to seek diligently for wisdom. I thought it was neat to be able to incorporate my coin collecting hobby into my preaching, and it was a good reminder to me that as much as I enjoy coins, I should delight in pleasing God even more!

"My son, if you receive my words
and treasure up my commandments with you,
making your ear attentive to wisdom
and inclining your heart to understanding;
yes, if you call out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God."

One hundred years ago, the US Mint released three brand new coins into circulation. The Winged Liberty, or "Mercury" Dime, the Standing Liberty quarter, and the Walking Liberty half dollar. They are recognized as being some of the most beautifully-designed coins in American history.

Now the US Mint is releasing gold commemoratives of each of these three coins. The dime commemorative will be issued as a 1/10 oz gold coin, the quarter is a 1/4 oz gold coin, and the half dollar is a 1/2 oz gold coin. All coins will be done in 24 karat gold, and will have the same dimensions as the originals.

Here is one of my Christmas presents. The picture quality isn't the best, but it is an 1898 British half sovereign coin featuring Queen Victoria on the obverse and the legend of St. George slaying the dragon on the reverse. It is a neat coin that could have been carried around by Winston Churchill!

Greeting coin nerds!

Collier Coin Consulting is still alive! Things have been crazy this fall, as Matthew has returned to teaching junior high English and also doing some preaching.
