Help Shape the Future of Recreation in the Reading Area!

The City of Reading, Reading Township, Reading Community Schools, and our community recreation partners are working together to develop the Reading Area 2027–2031 Parks and Recreation Plan. This five-year plan will identify priorities for parks, trails, recreational facilities, programming, and future grant opportunities that will benefit our entire community.

Your feedback is essential! Please take a few minutes to complete our community survey and help guide future recreational investments and improvements throughout the Reading Area.

The teams traveled to Pittsford for their Early Bird Invitational to kick off the 2026 season. It a bit warm with not a lot of air flow which proved to be problematic as times across the board seemed to be off. That's ok, though, everyone is a work in progress; we don't need to be heroes in August. We just need to keep forging ahead and keep looking for improvement, little or big, along the way.

In the boys race, first time CCer Jack Hughes paced the Rangers in 4th place with a time of 21:08. Senior Dylan McCallister finished 8th in 21:40 and returning Sophomore Isaac Hyde finished 13th with a time of 24:56. All three boys took home a medal.

In the girls race, returning Sophomore Lizzy Falater finished 14th for a medal with a time of 31:04. Freshman Kendall Osburn finished 18th in 35:29.

Great efforts by all despite the conditions! Great job teams!

We have a week off to recover and train before we race again on August 26 at the Concord Invitational.

Please join us in giving a massive Ranger welcome to our new Superintendent, Mel Rentschler!

Mel joins Reading Community Schools with over 33 years of experience in public education. He has worn just about every hat imaginable. He spent 21 years at Liberty Center School District in Ohio, where he taught social studies, advised the junior class, and coached varsity wrestling and football for 13 years. He then spent eight years as their high school principal and served as interim superintendent. For the past 12.5 years, Mel has served as the superintendent of the Allen East Local School District in Ohio and officially retired from the Ohio Education Retirement System on July 31, 2026.

Mel’s personal philosophy is simple: always do what is best for kids. As a leader, he believes in moving mountains and removing obstacles so our students can thrive. He views working with children as a truly noble profession and sees his role as ensuring our incredible staff has everything they need to help our students reach the next level.

Mel has been happily married to his wife, Kelly, for over 35 years. Kelly is also a retired teacher with over 30 years of experience. They have two children: Christopher, an engineer, and Chyeenne, a special education teacher. Mel also has seven grandchildren who are the absolute joys of his life: Reylyn, Charlie, Carson, Ridley, Brynn, Hillis, and Clay.

Mel is genuinely looking forward to getting to know everyone and having plenty of fun this school year as we watch our students succeed.

Mel is hitting the ground running and is excited to begin his journey with Reading Community Schools. Please join our Board of Education and Staff to show Mel exactly what our amazing Ranger family and community is all about.

Welcome to the team, Mel!
