Cool head. Thinking instead of panic!

"I can tell you about one adventure that I had when we were doing cross country. We had to do cross country on the steerman and then cross country on the AT-6 and I was flying, I guess it was into Midland, Texas, and as I was approaching the airport, I suddenly saw some fire coming out of the exhaust on the right. Mind you, I'm still in training and I said 'Gee, what should I do? If I bail out, there's going to be all kinds of reports and I may even wash out. Well nothing's coming near this cockpit, as yet. Well, I'll just call' (because I could see the airport), 'I'll call the airport and I'll tell them I would like an emergency landing and we'll land. And I'll just keep my eye on the stack out there with the fire coming out.' So I landed, got down all right, and they found something wrong with the airplane. I don't remember what it was. And they called the base for me to say that I would be delayed and they fixed it, and then I took it back home. But we were anxious to get through the program that we would take little chances, rather than maybe washing out or not being a part." - Bernice Falk Haydu, 44-W-7, Oral History https://buff.ly/30RnbSe

I have said this same thing! I still do!

"From as far back as I can remember, I thought it was wonderful to fly. I used to dream that I could fly -- not flapping my wings, but soaring like a glider." - Margery Moore Holben, 43-W-4, "The Blade Tribune" https://buff.ly/35jICvG

WASP Anna Louise Flynn Monkiewicz of class 43-W-6 took her final flight on August 10, 2019. She was 100 years of age. During her years as a WASP, she ferried airplanes far and wide across our nation. Fly high beautiful soul!❤
