Austin Prep welcomed grandparents to campus today for Grandparents Day “Two”. Over 200 grandparents enjoyed continental breakfast and fellowship in the Dining Hall before being joined by their Austin Prep grandchildren for a special prayer service in Richard J. Meelia ‘67 Hall. The day celebrating the special bond between grandparent and grandchild concluded with a grandchild-led tour of campus.

Grandparents Days are always a special occasion at Austin Prep. Thank you to all the Austin Prep Grandparents who attended, as well as all those who helped make the special days possible.

Austin Prep welcomed guests to campus today for Grandparents Day. Over 200 grandparents arrived to campus for continental breakfast and fellowship, before being joined by their Austin Prep grandchildren for a special prayer service in Richard J. Meelia ‘67 Hall. The day celebrating the special bond between grandparent and grandchild concluded with a grandchild-led tour of campus.

Today’s Grandparents Day represented just half of the Austin Prep student community. The second half will be welcomed to campus tomorrow for Grandparents Day “Two”. We are looking forward to it!

For Allyson Jaena, Austin Prep has been both a professional home and an important part of her family’s story.

Since joining the Business Office in 2010, Allyson has witnessed firsthand the dedication of the faculty, staff, coaches, families, and leadership who make the Austin Prep experience so special. That connection became even more meaningful as she watched her three sons — Colin ’19, Brendan ’22, and Cameron ’26 — grow through their own Austin Prep experiences and carry the School’s Augustinian values with them beyond campus.

We are incredibly grateful to Allyson and the Jaena family for the many ways they continue to support Austin Prep and help make that same transformative experience possible for the students who follow.

Austin Prep is proud to kick off the return of our “Alumni Spotlight” series with accomplished meteorologist Joe Sciacca, Jr. ’13. Joe’s passion for meteorology is rooted in his Austin Prep experience. From weather reports posted on daily announcement boards to working with WHDH’s Chief Meteorologist Jeremy Reiner, Joe is grateful to Austin Prep for providing him with a creative outlet to express his interest in weather. Now an Operational Meteorologist at National Weather Forecasting, Inc., Joe keeps clients well-informed with his undeniable conscientiousness and extensive weather consulting experience. By tradition, the Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to a certain devotion. The month of October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. The Office of Mission and Ministry prepared an all school Rosary for the entire Austin Prep community on Thursday. Students were encouraged to bring their own Rosary, which often has special meaning for the student.

Did you know that October is National Dyslexia Awareness Month?

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability related to word reading and/or spelling, affecting about 1 in 5 people. In 2002, the U.S. Senate first established October as National Dyslexia Awareness Month.

At Austin Prep, the Richard J. Meelia '67 Center for Integrated Learning partners with students with dyslexia to support their learning. Academic accommodations, literacy tutorials, and our CIL English classes can help support these students' growth.

Austin Prep Assistant Head for Middle School and Academic Resources Michael McLaughlin has released Plymouth Blitz, a new book that brings to light the story of 71 civilians killed during a largely forgotten World War II bombing in Plymouth, England. Rooted in years of research and a personal family connection, the book reflects the same curiosity, scholarship, and commitment to storytelling that McLaughlin brings to his work with Austin Prep students.

Mr. McLaughlin was joined by students and colleagues for a special book signing event on campus this morning. The event featured remarks from Eric Smith, Theology Department Chair; Michelle Connor, Assistant Head for Upper School and Student Services; musical selections from Markus Faust '29, and a conversation with Mr. McLaughlin moderated by William Driscoll, Ed.D. '89.

Austin Prep announced at Friday's Community Meeting that Higor Carvalho Fontoura Filho '27, Connor Lynch '27, Celia Sensale '27, and Andreas Visan '27, have been named Commended Students in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Out of the 1.3 million students who took the qualifying PSAT, approximately 34,000 students nationwide are being recognized as Commended Students for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Commended Students are recognized for their exceptional academic promise and placed among the most academically accomplished high school seniors in the United States.

“The recognition of the students speaks to the remarkable dedication of our students and the supportive community that surrounds them at Austin Prep,” said James Hickey, Ph.D., Head of School. “Their hard work reflects the values of veritas, unitas, and caritas that guide our school, and we look forward to seeing the ways they will make a positive impact in the years ahead.”

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, Commended Students represent a “valuable national resource,” and their recognition is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in the nation.
