Survival tip of the day!
List of basic human survival needs: And the rule of 3's
Oxygen - Probably too basic, But should be on the list. You can't survive underwater, in Space, or in any environment devoid of Oxygen or toxic atmospherically. Some caves or mines may qualify as shelter, but not if the atmosphere is toxic, and you wouldn't know usually until it too late. So, if seeking emergency shelter in a cave, stay in the mouth of the cave for plenty of breathable air. You can only live for 3 minutes without oxygen.
Water - Your body is approximately 70 % water by weight. You are essentially a big bag of water....that leaks! You perspire and lose water, you respire (breathe) and lose water, your kidneys clean your blood and you urinate, and you lose water. The addition of water to a normal functioning body is imperative for your survival. You can only live for 3 days without water.
Food - Your body is a bio-mechanical machine and it requires fuel to run and keep itself warm. Without food (caloric energy) to burn, the system goes down. The food must be safe, free from pathogens, parasites, or toxins. Some wild plants are edible, many are not, most taste like crap and some....will kill you! In an emergency situation, know what you are putting in your mouth. You can only live 3 weeks without food. (Us,fat people a little longer!)
Shelter - Protection from the elements! If its hot, you must stay reasonably cool. If its wet, you must stay reasonably dry. If its cold, you must stay reasonably warm. Knowing how to seek shelter or build one is extremely important in a survival situation. Protection figures into this too. Protection from larger wild animals that may target you as a food source, or protection from a hostile entity bent on your harm.
Sleep - Sleep deprivation in a survival situation can be as deadly as anything else. Without a clear head, making rational decisions, a miscalculation or becoming unobservant of potential dangers can be very unforgiving.
