Can where you're from determine who you become? Mr. Chabot's Honors American Lit students spent three weeks building an argument—then defended it live.

For their final exams, students explored how place shapes identity, behavior, and moral decision-making in a Maine text of their choice. They then presented and defended their arguments before a panel of Kents Hill faculty members, responding in real time to questions about their ideas, evidence, and interpretations.

Selected texts included Hazel Says No by Jessica Berger Gross, Water Dogs by Lewis Robinson, Olive, Again by Elizabeth Strout, Landslide by Susan Conley, Downeast by Gigi Georges, and Woodsqueer by Gretchen Legler.

🌊 In Maine Waters, students spent two weeks in the field—from Belgrade's inland lakes to the Penobscot Bay coast—working alongside scientists and educators from 7 Lakes Alliance and the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership.

Through water quality testing, species identification, and habitat mapping, students investigated everything from the lobster industry and aquaculture to the ripple effects of recreational and commercial fishing. Then they made it their own: six fully student-designed inquiry projects, brought to life through final products as unique as the questions behind them—from a carved table for the Belgrade Library to a triptych imagining what happens when a species disappears from its ecosystem.

🛶 In Maine Woods, students headed deep into Maine's northern forest for an immersive study of ecology, history, and outdoor leadership—centered around a student-planned canoe trip down the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

Along the way, they explored the enduring role of Maine's timber industry, forest management, and the human stories tied to the state's working woods—examining it all from environmental, historical, and industrial perspectives. The journey itself became the lesson: teamwork, resilience, and a deeper connection to place.

🌲🌊 Introducing Maine Woods & Maine Waters—our inaugural summer experiential learning programs!

Earlier this summer, Kents Hill students traded the classroom for the field, diving into fully immersive, interdisciplinary courses exploring Maine's forests and waterways—from history and colonization to the timber industry and the effects of a changing climate. The best part? Every project was student-designed, student-driven, and credit-bearing, satisfying a full Environmental Science credit.

This isn't a one-time thing—it's the start of something new for Kents Hill School. Follow along this week as we spotlight each program, and get ready to hear more from our students when they return to campus this fall!

Throwback to when Mr. Cook's Architecture students completed a hands-on design challenge of measuring the Robotics room, creating a to-scale blueprint, and laser cutting miniature versions of everything in it to reimagine the space from the ground up. This is what learning looks like at Kents Hill School. 🤖📐✨
