Understanding who we are teaching requires a purposeful alignment of personal belief systems. What is critically relevant are the belief systems responsible for how teachers might view their roles and relationships with students of color and working-class, poor students. How teachers approach their classroom practices to provide “freedom” experiences for youth in urban schools is key.

In Teaching to Transgress (hooks, 1994), she posits that “to educate as the practice of freedom is a way of teaching that anyone can learn." This freedom can only happen by way of a transformative pedagogy that she declares must be grounded in respect for multiculturalism.
