The Appalachian Trainer's Face Off has ended. This event uses talented trainers to prepare and show potential rescue horses for adoption through Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC. I was privileged to be a judge this year. There were some nice horses to be seen.
There were also some great people putting in the time and work to make lives better for the animals we all love. There are enough rescues doing it poorly that it was refreshing to see an organization with their heads on straight. If you have it on your heart to adopt one, I'd look here first.

It was also a pleasure to meet and spend time with my fellow judges Brandon and Noelle Salmons, Julia and Michael Lyons, Jesse Westfall, Noah TY, and Patrick King. What a great group of knowledgeable horsemen and horsewomen they are! Pretty cool and fun to hang out with too.

The magnitude of your problems says a lot.

I think congratulations are in order for the entire horse industry!

Apparently we've arrived at a point in time where the largest abuse debate we have is whether keeping one in a stall or turning them out too much is more abusive...

I've been asking on the podcast lately about bringing back old words. Does hyperbole qualify as an old word that needs to come back?

Among other things that should be said out loud, keep in mind that while we still have progress to make, there has never been a better time in history to be a horse than right now.

For the record, I like them turned out and just being a horse, with other horses, as much as possible. Glad I now know the errors of that thought process.

I think this is an evolution from whether blanketing them is more abusive than not blanketing them. We'll see. Winter is coming.

There's a lot of ethical talk about horses and our world. I'm here for it. I think there should be some serious discussions.

That being said, just because an idea is new or progressive, doesn't mean it's a good idea. It hasn't stood the test of time.

You've probably heard that horses should be allowed to say no. If no is not a possibility, then yes means nothing. Stuff like that.

My question for you, is it ok for you to also tell your horse no? What does a world look like where horses are never told no? Is that progress or are we throwing the baby out with the bath water? Is there no room for nuance anymore? It sure seems like there are those on pedistals saying their way is the only ethical way. The word abuse is being thrown around like mardi gras beads. Where is the line between persitence and "forcing them to do it"?

If a horse says no to trailer loading, but I persist and get them in 45 minutes later, was that unethical because I didn't honor the no? If it's not okay to hit a horse, why is it ok to pat them on the neck when we're proud?

I know where I stand. What are your thoughts?
