"And be not drunk with w**e, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;"

Paul sets it against drunkenness. W**e can take over a person’s mind and behavior and lead to excess (ἀσωτία, reckless living). Being filled with the Spirit is the opposite kind of control: the Spirit influences thought, speech, and conduct so that the person is directed by God rather than by the flesh or by an intoxicant."
