Our little learners had so much fun collecting beautiful fall leaves and preserving them with beeswax!

This hands-on nature activity gave the children an opportunity to explore the beautiful colors, shapes, and textures of autumn while learning a simple way to preserve a little piece of the season.

We finished by bundling their leaves with yarn and adding a personalized keepsake tag.

A Week of Learning at Little Dragonfly’s Childcare!

We had another busy week filled with hands-on learning, creativity, and lots of opportunities to practice new skills!

Our theme this week was My Five Senses, and the children explored how we use our senses throughout the day. One of our favorite activities was our lemon exploration! The children held and touched a lemon, smelled it after we cut it open, and had the opportunity to taste a wedge. Even our littlest friends were included in the experience!

We created our own Five Senses books, made listening ears, built Potato Heads with construction paper, practiced scissor skills, and worked on a few fall projects. We also continued working on rhyming words, beginning letter sounds, counting, colors, and our morning calendar.

There were some wonderful little developmental moments this week, too from independently matching beginning sounds and completing crafts, to counting, learning the days of the week, practicing turn-taking with friends, sitting independently, reaching for toys, and banging toys together to explore cause and effect.

When the weather cooperated, we headed outside for bubbles, running and playing, motorcycle riding, and stroller walks. Even with a couple rainy days mixed in, we packed plenty of learning and fun into our week!

We wrapped up our Friends & Feelings theme this week! We explored kindness, sharing, listening, playing together, recognizing emotions, and what it means to be a good friend. The children also created a “Friends Help Each Other Grow” project using their own handprints.

We also took advantage of the changing season and headed outside for some fall nature exploration! The children went on a nature hunt, collected and examined leaves, and made leaf rubbings to discover all the different shapes, lines, and details.

Together, we started creating our “Leaves in Maine” board featuring several types of leaves found right here in Maine. We’ll continue adding to it this coming week as we begin learning all about our 5 senses — sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.

Our fall and nature exploration will fit right in as we use our senses to explore the colors, textures, sounds, smells, and other changes happening outdoors this time of year!

A little Saturday morning childcare project! Created some recipe cards to go with our wooden cookie-baking set and gave the play kitchen space a little makeover.

Now enrolling age 2+!

Licensed family childcare for 20 years and a Star 4 quality-rated program. Full-time enrollment, Monday–Friday, 7:30 AM–4:30 PM. Occasional hours outside operating hours available.

Curriculum and hands-on learning in our designated classroom, a separate toy room for independent play and exploring, and a large fully fenced backyard.

Meals and snacks included. Television-free, small-group environment with a maximum of 6 children per day.

Our new sign has been installed!

We finished our ocean animal theme with a special project the children can actually wear! Each child created their own ocean-themed shirt.

We started by making handprints that were transformed into colorful fish. Then, using stencils I created with the Cricut, we painted on coral, seaweed, starfish, ocean animals, bubbles, and other underwater details to complete their designs.

I love how each shirt turned out completely unique! This project brought together creativity, sensory exploration, fine-motor skills, color recognition, and all of the ocean vocabulary and concepts we’ve been learning throughout our theme.
