Scientists at Mississippi State University are on the lookout for a new invasive species of tick, and they want Mississippians to know their help is crucial in detecting the pest.

The Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, has been confirmed in neighboring Arkansas, Alabama and Tennessee, and more than 20 other states. They were first discovered in New Jersey in 2017 where they infested a herd of sheep.

“As of August 21, there have been zero confirmed reports of the Asian longhorned tick in Mississippi,” said Santos Portugal, an entomologist with the MSU Extension Service. “That doesn’t necessarily mean that they aren’t here, only that their presence has not yet been confirmed. It has been collected in neighboring states but not yet near the Mississippi border.”

The Asian longhorned tick is a major pest of livestock, but they feed on all types of animals, including birds, wildlife and pets, and even people. The female’s ability to reproduce rapidly on its own without mating -- up to 2,000 eggs at a time -- means one animal, person or area can be infested with hundreds or thousands of ticks quickly.

These ticks are small and reddish-brown with no white coloration or spots. They have short, wide mouthparts and will appear in unusually large numbers clustered on livestock or another animal.

Immature ticks, or nymphs, are about 2 millimeters in size. Unfed adults measure 3 to 4 millimeters, which is about the size of an apple seed. Engorged females are 4 to 10 millimeters in size, while other stages of the pest are much smaller, around the size of a sesame seed or smaller.

They prefer areas with tall grass and high humidity, such as pastures, but have also been found in shaded lawns in neighborhoods.

Their ability to reproduce in such high numbers in a short amount of time, adapt and spread to new climates and spread disease makes them especially concerning to animal health officials, said Carla Huston, Extension veterinarian and professor with the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine.

“These ticks can begin reproducing at six months versus the two years typical of more common tick species. In other words, a single tick can create a whole new population of ticks in an area in a short amount of time,” Huston said.

“Hundreds to thousands of these small ticks can be found on an animal at one time. The ticks themselves can cause great stress, a reduction in growth or production and even death due to the extreme blood loss from the tick infestation. This is especially a concern for sheep and goats,” she said.

They are known to transmit livestock and human diseases, including anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, theileriosis and rickettsiosis, in addition to several viruses.

One particular type of theileriosis transmitted by this pest has caused a lot of concern in the cattle industry, Huston said. Bovine theileriosis, or T. orientalis Ikeda, can cause serious illness in animals and has no vaccine or treatment.

“We have not diagnosed Ikeda in Mississippi,” she said.

The best defense for livestock owners against these ticks is to maintain a livestock tick control program and keep vegetation cut down.

“Livestock owners should consult their veterinarian regarding which tick prevention products to use on their animals. Pets also need to be protected against ticks and other external parasites,” Huston said.

“Elimination of tick habitat is not entirely possible in farm and pasture settings, but keeping tall grass and overgrown brush cut down may help reduce infestation,” she said. “Keeping cattle out of wooded areas may also reduce the number of ticks that can attach to your cattle.”

In Asia, these ticks are associated with tick-borne human diseases and the agents that cause them, including Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, rickettsia, anaplasma and Powassan virus.

“Thankfully, as of right now, these ticks are not believed to be a significant vector for human diseases in the United States, although researchers are continuing to monitor that potential,” Portugal said.

While Asian longhorned ticks have yet to be confirmed in the state, some of Mississippi’s native ticks still pose a risk for disease transmission, and people should try to prevent tick bites, no matter what the species, Portugal said.

When in areas where ticks are likely to be, including heavily wooded areas or places with thick vegetation, using insect repellants proven effective by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, can reduce your chances of being bitten. People should also wear light colored clothing to more easily see ticks, tuck pant legs into socks or boots, and check the entire body for ticks immediately after being outside.

Several active ingredients for skin-applied repellants effective against ticks are registered with the EPA and can be found on the EPA website.

Livestock owners and the public should remain vigilant and report the appearance of any unusual ticks or an abnormally large number of ticks, Huston said.

Portugal said Mississippians who encounter what they suspect may be Asian longhorned ticks should submit a sample for confirmation to the Mississippi State Department of Health’s Entomology and Vector Control Program.

Place ticks in a hard, leakproof container with isopropyl alcohol then place that container in a zip-close bag. Also send collection details, including date, time, location, the animal the tick was found on and the submitter’s contact information. August would typically be too early to accurately forecast Mississippi’s soybean crop, but this year, it is a month ahead of schedule – far enough along to predict a promising harvest.

Mississippi State University Extension soybean specialist Justin Calhoun anticipates a state record-breaking yield in 2026. The previous record, 57 bushels per acre, was last reached in 2023.

Growers in the state planted about 2.3 million acres of soybeans this year. As of Aug. 17, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated 66% of the state’s soybeans are in either good or excellent condition, with another 31% described as fair.

Widespread early planting helped give this year’s soybean crop a head start, Calhoun said, and timely rainfall brought about the possibility of record-breaking yields.

“The Delta soybean crops look average. What’s really going to make up the ground, I think, is the beans on the eastern side of the state,” he said. “Most of that ground that has normally been planted in May, maybe even June, got planted in late March or early April, on into that optimal window of mid-April.”

He also discussed ongoing research at MSU examining planting dates, seeding rates and replant thresholds. One study is evaluating soybean populations as low as 45,000 seeds per acre to determine how effectively modern soybean varieties can compensate for thinner stands.

“We have been overseeding soybeans, especially with some of these newer, more aggressive varieties,” Calhoun said. “The recommendation of 130,000 to 140,000 seeds per acre is a little high. In some scenarios, different tillage practices, cover crops, the more factors we throw in there, we might have to adjust some, but we’re seeing some of those extreme low seeding rates being able to fill in.”

Originating as a pilot project in Georgia around 2017, the census was created in response to a desire for gardeners to learn more about the pollinators they were seeing. Fast forward several years, Mississippi is now the sixth state to be included in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census, joining alongside Georgia, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

The three main goals of the project are:

1. to create sustainable pollinator habitat.
2. to increase the entomological literacy of our citizens.
3. to generate useful data about our pollinator populations.

We have recently welcomed a new entomologist to support producers and professionals who work with turf, forages and ornamentals!

Zia Williamson, a native of Lincolnton, Georgia, joined MSU May 1 as an Extension entomology specialist focused on turf, forages and ornamentals. She is also an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural Sciences and Plant Protection.

Williamson grew up in a family that owned and operated a landscaping business, which led to an early interest in plants and insects. In college, a summer job in plant pathology introduced her to Extension.

“When I first encountered Extension, I discovered how much I enjoyed working directly with growers and citizens who benefit from the work of a land-grant university,” Williamson said.

“In my role at Mississippi State University, I’m excited to combine my personal and family background in the green industry with my training in entomology to help growers, industry professionals and citizens better understand and manage the insect problems they encounter,” she said.

Her Extension work will provide growers, golf course superintendents, landscape professionals, Extension agents and homeowners with training, educational resources and research-based pest management recommendations.

Williamson holds a bachelor’s degree in both entomology and horticulture from the University of Georgia. She also earned master’s and doctoral degrees in entomology from UGA.

Her research experience includes nematology, applied entomology, plant production and fruit pathology, as well as insect ecology and management in turf grass, ornamentals, specialty crops and urban landscapes.

Mississippi raises more than half of U.S. catfish, but overseas competition, rising input costs and bird depredation are among operational and financial challenges producers face just to stay in business.

Two federal assistance programs approved in July aim to extend some relief. Two weeks before the U.S. Department of Agriculture officially set aside $20 million to buy U.S. farm-raised catfish under its Section 32 program on July 23, it updated its Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program. Known as ELAP, this program will pay $600 per acre per year to eligible farm-raised catfish producers who suffered inventory loss due to bird depredation.

The USDA Section 32 program is a federal purchase appropriation allowing the agency to buy surplus American-grown produce, meat, poultry and fish when growers have excess supply. The food is generally distributed through school meal programs, food banks and other nutrition assistance programs.

The ELAP payment rate is based on the costs associated with the deterrence of birds that eat fish, the value of lost fish and revenue from bird depredation, and costs associated with disease loss from bird depredation. A producer must be able to provide evidence to be eligible for this payment.

Jimmy Avery, catfish specialist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, said the purchases will enhance supply chain mobility by reducing surplus inventory and supporting struggling producers who are warehousing fish in their ponds to wait for better prices.

“Roughly 94% of catfish are sold to processors, so farmers in all states have to work closely with their processors to get their fish in the plant,” Avery said. “If processors can’t sell their products due to cheaper foreign imports or other marketing constraints, products accumulate in freezers, delaying the need for more fish to be processed.

“Farmers then have to hold live fish in ponds where they are subject to being eaten by birds or exposed to disease,” he said.

Ganesh Kumar, aquaculture economist with the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, said high input costs and delays in harvesting are having a negative impact on catfish farms. The domino effect of high fuel costs affects other production costs such as aeration, scaring depredating birds and fish transportation. Feed prices are over $400 per ton, further inflating production costs.

“Marketing challenges or excess inventory mean fewer fish are needed at the processing plant, and hence market-ready fish have to remain longer in ponds,” Kumar said. “Farmers consider getting out of business when production costs remain higher than the fish prices for more than two or three years.

“Since 2023, cost of production on many farms has been higher than fish price,” he said.

Many catfish farmers, Avery said, are reducing acreage as can be seen in reported acreage trends. Mississippi catfish farmers reported 28,500 acres used for catfish production in 2026. This is down 5% or 1,400 acres from 2026.

Despite the decrease, Mississippi is still the largest catfish producer, with 55% of U.S. acreage. Mississippi also has the highest reported acreage in fingerling production, with 4,500 acres.

“Those farmers who stay in production are intensifying current acreage with higher aeration rates, use of hybrid catfish and purchasing vaccinated fingerlings,” Avery said.

Producers are encouraged to visit the local office of the USDA Farm Services Agency to register acreage and apply for these assistance programs.
