The Red Devil Network has selected the next Red Devil of the Week: Marcus Williams!

Marcus is currently a freshman at Ravenswood High. Marcus plays JV and freshman basketball, and will run track in the spring. He was a member of the 2022 Red Devil football team, but suffered a major concussion and was sidelined for most of the season. Marcus is also one of the few freshman members of the Red Devil Network, acting as the lead editor of the Sports Team, but also frequently contributing to the other news teams.

Recently, Marcus stepped into a vital role at the high school: helping his best friend Marshall Creel. Marshall recently suffered a serious injury in an ATV accident which left him bound to a wheelchair for a while. While in the wheelchair, Marcus pushed him everywhere he needed to go in the school, and even made sure to get him onto the football field during the Powder Puff game and Senior Week pep rally. Marshall now gets around the school using crutches, and Marcus continues to carry his things and help him with everything he needs throughout the school day. "I just started helping him because we have every class with each other. I also just hated seeing Marshall in that situation, and wanted to be there for him."

Marcus told us that the college he wants to go to is Ohio State. "My family went to Ohio State, and it is just a great school." He hopes to play college basketball and earn his degree in sports broadcasting.

It is so great to have students like Marcus at Ravenswood High who are willing to work hard and be there for their best friends in their toughest times.

At the conclusion of the season, the Devilette Volleyball team received LKC All-Conference honors for four of their athletes:

*First Team All-LKC - Macy Casto
Second Team All-LKC - Abby Scritchfield
Honorable Mention - Victoria Knox and Olivia Fitzpatrick

We interviewed Macy about the experience. She said “I am very thankful for the award, and it is an honor. I am glad to represent my school and the community in this way!"

We also asked her what she wants to work on going into next season. She said "I want to improve my vertical, and work on my passing ability. As for the team, we as a whole need to work on our mental space. Everything that we struggled with near the end of the season was involving our mentality."

We are so proud of our Devilettes, both individually and as a team, and we look forward to another great season next year!

DRESSED FOR SUCCESS…..The Red Devils will take the court wearing new home and away uniforms this season. Although the throwback uniforms worn during celebration nights last season were a huge success, it is traditional white for home and black for the road in 2023. Both sets are reflective of the era of basketball being played in college and the NBA. The team will also wear new shooting shirts. The players had a big say in the design of the new gear. Ravenswood basketball takes great pride in attractive uniform design that reflects class and pride. The program has no peer statewide with the white, black, red, and grey styles that have been worn through the seasons by Red Devil players.
Also fans will be seeing a much brighter basketball in games this season. The WVSSAC switched to the Wilson Evo ball that is much more orange.

The Red Devil Network has selected the next Red Devil of the Week: Matthew Patterson!

Matthew is a senior at Ravenswood High School. Matthew is the overall team captain for Ravenswood High's first ever eSports Team, and is the team captain for the varsity Valorant team (currently ranked #6 in West Virginia). Matthew has been officially competing in eSports as an individual for over 3 years. He started out by playing Fortnite back in 2019 and recently has taken up the game Valorant. He was also on the Red Devil football team; he has been playing since the first year he could play. This year was his first year on the team since he was in the ninth grade as a result of a broken collarbone injury. He has also joined the Concert Choir this year.

Mr. Jarrell, his service learning placement and eSports coach, said that "Matthew was an excellent social studies student for me last year, but has gotten even better as a student this year by getting more involved with school programs. Starting the eSports program has been a frequently difficult and frustrating endeavor, but having Matthew has made the process so much better than trying to do it on my own. His leadership skills are always on display."

Matthew shared those feelings for the program and Mr. Jarrell's advice. "I'm thankful to be a part of both a good team and program. Mr. Jarrell is a great teacher, and even though he barely knows anything about eSports (haha!), he has worked hard to give us everything we need to be competitive."

Matthew has been accepted to Fairmont State, Concord and, his college of choice, West Virginia Wesleyan. He is going to enter a four-year program for Information Security Analysis. "An Information Security Analyst is someone who monitors their organization's networks for security breaches and investigates when one occurs," Matthew told us. The classes he is going to take will include computer science and criminal justice. He has been signed to West Virginia Wesleyan's eSports team on the largest eSports scholarship ever awarded to a Ravenswood High graduate, and plans to compete on the Valorant team.

Congratulations Matthew!

The Red Devil Network has selected the next Red Devil of the Week: Lexi Smith!

Lexi is a junior at Ravenswood High. Her activities include competing as a member of the Varsity Volleyball Team, cooking and reading as hobbies, and writing.

Her love for writing has made her a standout in veteran RHS English teacher Mr. Anderson’s famed Creative Writing class. Each week Lexi and the class have assignments that vary in form and genre. On one occasion, she had the chance to write a short story in the genre of horror: "Hell is Real." The story featured the theme of sleep paralysis.

Later, Lexi was given the opportunity to submit work for a horror collection curated by the Ripley Branch of the Jackson County Public Libraries. Her short story won the grand prize for 11th-12th grade and will be published in a book by the library that will feature 34 stories submitted by Jackson County teens and adults, titled Tales of Horror. When asked about the competition, she told us, "They told me the story had to be scary and somewhat appropriate, which was difficult! But, I am glad to have had the opportunity to be a part of it, and excited to see my work published."

We also interviewed Sophomore Jasper Tinsman, fellow star writer in the class, who said about Lexi, "I think her writing is beautiful. It's like listening to music and the world drowning out around you. It's great to have the Creative Writing class with her." Junior Olive Profitt said, "Lexi really deserves this honor. Her writing is incredible, breathtaking, and really shows how great of a person she is."

Mr. Anderson told us, "Alexandria is an outstanding writer and orator, she loves reading and writing, and communicates effectively and passionately. She is a great student who is conscientious, hard-working, passionate about what she does, puts her own spin on everything does, and I just love having her in class."

We are so proud of our creative minds at Ravenswood High, and Lexi represents one of the best. Tales of Horror will be made available by KDP Publishing on Amazon within the next few months. Stay tuned for an update from us and the Jackson County Public Library - JCPL page when it is published!

Here is our extra-spooky recap of Ravenswood High's Halloween this past Monday! Students and staff alike went all-out this year with amazing costumes. After school, the Freshman Class hosted the RHS Trunk or Treat in the HJK Elementary parking lot, and the Red Devil roamed the streets to get pictures with Trick-or-Treaters.

All in all, it was a scary good time!

The Ravenswood High Marching Band placed first in their last competition of the 22-23 season!

After a long season, the Band finally reached their goal, placing first in their class at the Point Pleasant Battle of the Bands competition.

In celebration of this win, the band got the honor of being escorted back into town by multiple fire engines and police cruisers, blaring their sirens while students sang victory songs and waved to Ravenswood residents outside the bus windows. The band was beyond happy for the recognition, and had a blast on their way home, riding on the high of winning.

Jonah Carmichael, who plays the tenor drums and is a senior in the Ravenswood band, told the RDN that this was a “big step up” from their previous marching seasons.

“After the season we had last year, everyone wanted to try harder this year to see what we were actually capable of doing. It was such a good feeling to win first place at our last show, really a great ending to the year. It was a good show to end on too, it was a good run. I had a lot of fun.”

Jonah is credited for coming up with the band's motto of the year, “Disco space junk.”

Unknown to many Ravenswood residents, there’s more to our Ravenswood Marching Band than meets the eye: it is one of the few competitive West Virginian marching bands that includes both middle school and high school students, some students being in seventh grade. The band having more middle school students than high school in a high-school-level competitive scene put them at a big disadvantage, but of course our Marching Red Devils still brought home the win with their performance.

The same day, but earlier in the morning, the marching band also went to the final competition in the Governor’s Cup competition series, the largest marching competition in the state. With over 45 marching bands from across West Virginia traveling to compete, the RHS Band placed fourth in their class at this competition, another great accomplishment due to the sheer number of bands competing.

The marching band considers this a very successful year, and appreciates all of the community support. Be sure to keep an eye out for the band’s future endeavors, such as parades and concerts.

It’s a great time to be a proud Red Devil!

This week, Ms. McCoy’s PE classes are playing Quidditch! Quidditch is based on the game of the same name depicted in the popular film and book series Harry Potter. Over the last few years, Quidditch has become popular in the United States. Quidditch involves scoring a ball through a hula hoop which earns your team ten points.

On Monday, the Red Devilette volleyball team won their first round of the sectional tournament against Gilmer County High.

The girls mounted a long comeback. The girls went down 2-0 in sets and did not get discouraged; they fought all the way back to win 3-2, accompanied by an electric student section.

Last night, the girls fought to another close finish with Wirt County High, losing 3 sets to their 2 wins. After the loss, the girls will play Gilmer again tomorrow (Thursday night at 6 PM in the DAC) to move forward. Come support our girls!
