Thank you so much Laura Peterson for hosting the Meet and Greet tonight at the library (and Sonja Patterson for the cookies) for the Ravenna community to come ask questions of the RPS School Board candidates. 5 of the 9 candidates were on hand and met with several community members about various topics. We had time to chat and also went rapid fire around the room, sharing our views on specific topics. I’d like to share a few of those responses with you all. Below is a summary of some discussions and also answers to questions from the community provided in advance.
I have shared much of this info before on my page, but my name is Becki Deater and I’m running for RPS School Board. I have nearly a decade as a public school teacher with my Masters in Educational Leadership. I served on many committees as a teacher, including the Building Leadership team, Curriculum Selection Committee, and interview team for our building Principal. I have spent the last 10 years in sales, during which I have gained a lot of knowledge about business and marketing strategies. I grew my territory from around a 200k territory to nearly a million dollars and was a goal setter 8 of my 9 years. I have since left the sales field to enter full time ministry with FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and I’m currently the area rep for Muskegon and Ottawa Counties. I spend time with district administrators, teachers, and students around the area to bring FCA to their school, or to help maintain and build their current groups. We also offer clinics, camps, and community events.
I am running because I have 4 children currently at RPS; Brody (senior, cross country, wrestling, baseball, National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christan Athletes, yearbook), Bellamie (freshman, wrestling, softball, FFA, Student Council), and our littles, Beckett in 2nd grade and Brielle in kindergarten. They keep us busy but it’s a lot of fun! I am running for my children and for all RPS kids! We need to focus on a rigorous curriculum and not unnecessary outside agendas. I'm also running to support the staff of RPS. They need to be supported in their classrooms and have the tools they need to effectively teach our kids.
I currently serve as the Secretary on the Ravenna Youth Wrestling board, head of cheer on the Ravenna Youth Football/Cheer board, Sports Booster rep for sideline and competitive cheer, assist with the 2025 Senior Class All Nighter committee, and Ravenna’s FCA. I also volunteer in classrooms, help with class parties, attend field trips, and more. We love being involved as much as we can in the Ravenna community and in our kids’ school adventures. My husband and I serve on our church’s Elder and Deaconess team and serve on Hospitality and in Sunday School.
I do not yet have experience serving on a school board and because of that, I can offer a fresh perspective on many issues. Since I am already very involved in the community, I am readily available to discuss community concerns, as an elected Board Member, I would be the voice of the community. I am willing to attend any trainings or conferences to learn and prepare me to be the best RPS School Board member I can be. I also attend nearly every school board meeting and my husband and/or I have been at nearly every meeting since moving here two years ago. I would also love to see committees come back to our board (Buildings and Grounds, Personnel, etc.) as I believe this would increase the level of accountability in our district.
Other questions from the community were about ethics and character. I’ve never been fired from a job or investigated by a government agency. I believe people would say I’m honest and trustworthy. I’m hardworking and put 100% into everything I do. I stand up for what I believe in and I am not afraid to stand alone. I will step up to do whatever it takes to get the job done and to do it well, with integrity. I would be honored to have your vote on November 5. If you have further questions or want to chat, please reach out anytime!
