✅ RAVENNA INVITE ✅
26 teams invited. Nearly 440 registered runners. 20+ hours of prep. 40 some cans of paint, 5 million checks of the weather forecast, and 1,200 spectators or better. Our town population literally doubled in size yesterday. The numbers seem unreal. But small town doesn’t have to mean small effort.
Teams traveled from as far west as Hershey and Mullen, south to Blue Hill, east to Milligan and Friend, and just about everywhere in between. A quick calculation found that schools traveled a combined 1,700+ miles just to GET to our meet. And, of course, they had to go home afterward too. At least we didn’t see anyone pitching tents after the races. For perspective, you could travel from Ravenna to either coast with that kind of mileage. Instead, everyone’s destination was the Ravenna Golf Club. We think they made the right choice.
Hosting a meet this size is a daunting task, but we’re incredibly appreciative that so many teams want to come experience our home course. Our goal has always been to make the Ravenna Invite the meet that schools want to get into and look forward to returning to year after year. This year in particular, we got to see several Top 10 boys in all of Class D, including the Top 3 who finished in their respective rankings. Basically, we hosted State yesterday.
A lot of people think the ambulance is there for the runners on our daunting hills, but let's be honest here, it's for Coach Ellis.
We’re ready to rest now rather than spend any more energy trying to come up with a clever and witty post, so we’re turning it over to you.
If you were there, tell us your favorite part of the Ravenna Invite or drop some of the photos you took in the comments. If you weren’t there, give us your best excuse. None of them are good, but we’ll hear you out. We told you it was free AND fun.
There are so many people who help make a meet of this size possible, but we especially need to thank the Ravenna Golf Club for being the world’s best hosts. A huge shoutout to Shannon and Marty! They are always flexible, always willing to work with us, and somehow continue to let us take over their beautiful course for a day.
Finally, we always say there’s something different about the spirit and community of cross country. XC really does become one big family, and I’m incredibly lucky to have that second family.
But after the last runner finishes, the awards are handed out, the crowds disappear, and all the stress of hosting our home invite finally fades away, I selfishly get my favorite moment of the entire year.
Last year, we started a new tradition: one final loop around the course as the sun sets, just me and my two favorite people, Barb and Arthur. After spending countless hours pouring so much into this team and this sport, there’s something pretty special about ending our biggest day of the season with the two people who sacrifice some of that time with me so I can do what I love.
Thank you, Barb and Arthur, for your patience and your support every fall. I love my XC family, but there’s no better way to close out our home meet than one last lap with the family I get to go home with.

Team Score: 1st place! (We don't keep team scores for JH at our invite but if we did, our girls would have gotten the meet champ status again this week!)
**Note: unfortunately, for a couple of the girls we don't have their exact places as we are busy finalizing high school results and don't get to watch their full race.
