Sometimes AWESOME gets thrown out there without much thought to what the word means, but here is the encyclopedia entry for the word:
"The Michigan Association of Agriscience Educators Outstanding Service Award recognizes educators whose careers have been defined by service to students, teachers, communities, and the profession of agricultural education. Tonight, it is our privilege to honor an individual who embodies that mission in every sense of the word, Melanie Block.
When Melanie arrived at Ravenna in July of 2000, she inherited a program that had been dormant for more than a decade. She began with just two agriscience classes, 22 FFA members, and a classroom located in what was essentially a storage closet.
Twenty-six years later, the Ravenna Agriscience and FFA program stands as one of the premier programs in Michigan and the nation. Under her leadership, membership has grown from 22 students to more than 240 members. The program now serves students in grades 7 through 12, employs a second agriscience teacher, and boasts modern classrooms, specialized laboratories, a greenhouse, expanded livestock facilities, beekeeping enterprises, community and pollinator gardens, and countless hands-on learning opportunities.
Through her vision and relentless dedication, she cultivated partnerships throughout the Ravenna community, creating a support network of parents, alumni, businesses, civic organizations, and agricultural leaders. She has secured more than $250,000 in grants and transformed community support into meaningful student experiences. One shining example was Ravenna's selection as one of only five schools in the nation to receive a $100,000 Rural Technology Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Through projects such as beekeeping and the innovative Stream Team, students learned not only agriscience, but also technology, research, communication, and leadership while sharing their work with audiences across the local, state, and national levels.
Melanie's service extends far beyond her own classroom. Having entered the profession through emergency certification, she became passionate about helping future teachers succeed. She has hosted six student teachers, mentored numerous beginning educators, and guided former students who now serve as agriscience teachers themselves. Whether answering a late-night phone call, sharing curriculum materials, or offering encouragement, Melanie has become a trusted mentor throughout Michigan agricultural education.
Her leadership within the profession is equally remarkable. She has served as President of the Michigan Association of Agriscience Educators, actively participated in numerous professional organizations, and dedicated herself to advancing agricultural education across the state.
The numbers associated with her career are impressive: 83 American Degrees, 178 State Degrees, 10 State FFA Officers, 36 Regional Officers, national proficiency winners, national chapter finalists, and countless state and national award-winning teams. Yet those statistics tell only part of the story.
Melanie's true legacy is measured in people. It is found in the students whose lives were changed, the teachers she mentored, the community she loves, and the profession she strengthened. Through humility, vision, and unwavering commitment, she has spent her career shaping the future one student at a time."
Plus - she has taught three students who have become Ag. Science teachers, too!
Ravenna is truly blessed to have such amazing educators. We can't thank her enough for all of your contributions to students and the community.
