Lakeland High School Advanced Art students learn the Grisaille technique every year. This involves creating an underpainting in grayscale. Later, they apply glazes of oil in color over the top.
A big thank you to amazing artist Joe Kronenberg for volunteering multiple times over the years to come talk to LHS art classes, and he shared this wonderful technique with us over a decade ago! It’s made a big impact and has been a great segue into oil painting for our students.
*We did modify the underpainting to acrylic to make it more high school user friendly, but the overglaze is oil.

Super excited to see this year’s submissions for the Art competition!! Stay tuned in January for more information.
We are so fortunate every year to get outstanding judges such as last year’s- Michele Chmielewski (recently served on the National Art Education Association executive board as the Pacific Regional Vice President), Joe Kronenberg, Buddy Le from Coeur d’Alene Galleries, Blair Williams from the Art Spirit Gallery, Michael Horswill, and many others.
The Lakeland Art Department appreciates you all for your support of the arts in your community!

AP Drawing and Pre-AP students do a variety of painting, drawing, and digital artwork while they build college-level portfolios.
They are phenomenal artists!!
Here's a sampling which includes screenshots of the slides (bottom right corners) they turn in with each project where they describe their processes, use of Elements and Principles of Design, revisions, and self-critique.

Here's some of the works that the Jewelry & Fiber Arts and Adv. Arts & Crafts classes have been doing.

This year, we celebrated our 15th year of the competition, and we were very fortunate to have Blair Williams, owner of The Art Spirit Gallery in CdA, judge for us.
Concurrently, the People’s Choice Award was voted on by ballot by students, staff, and teachers.
In all 15 years, the Best of Show and the People’s Choice have never the same artwork, and the streak is still unbroken! Money, certificates, and ribbons have been awarded to the winners - over $500!
Thank you to all who supported our successful exhibition!
