Undergraduate, master's and PhD degrees are offered in atmospheric and environmental sciences.

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences began in 1965 in order to offer a master's degree in meteorology, to accompany what was then the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences at SDSM&T. Graduate research assistants in this program worked with research professors on various areas of research in the atmospheric sciences. In 2012 the department transitioned from a research organization dependent on extern

We’re at the official end of the day of giving for the 2026 Raising for Rockers Drive.

We can’t begin to thank everyone who donated to this year’s drive. So far, you’ve given $5,450 for this coming meeting cycle. Last year’s donations went a long way in sending students to the American Meteorological Society's Annual Meeting last month and the Society for Freshwater Sciences’ Annual Meeting last May, and we look forward to sending more students to these meetings so they can grow into your colleagues!

The donation link will remain open, and after that, charitable giving for our students can be directed through the university’s Center for Alumni Relations and Advancement.

On behalf of our students, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

As our “24-hour” campaign approaches its occlusion , meet program senior Collin.

Five days of meetings do wonders to show how important it is to get our message out to 5000 of our students’ closest new friends, and in outlining strategies for targeting messages in a changing weather-scape and environment for our stakeholders!

The donation link is below. Thank you again for your support, and we’ll continue to introduce more students you’ve sent to these meetings learn critical communications skills.

As we start our “official” 24-hour campaign (19Z to 19Z), meet Jack, a junior in the program and AMS Student Chapter Officer.

Meetings like these are where our students and we can see emerging science and technologies that deliver weather and climate data from the point of a hazard's origin to decision-makers and ultimately to the public.

The donation link is below. Thank you again for your support, and we’ll continue to introduce more students you’ve sent to these meetings to learn the skills that give our students a competitive edge.

Meet Rye, a senior presenting her research at the full AMS Conference this year.

A key part of our students’ professional development is to get not only them but also their research out to the scientific community. Rye, a NOAA Hollings Scholar, presented her work on polar ice monitoring, a critical subject to navigating this sensitive region.

The donation link is below. Thank you again for your support, and we’ll continue to introduce more students you’ve sent to these meetings to present research critical to our national trade and security in a rapidly changing world.

Meet Hailee, one of our Student AMS Chapter officers:

There is more to attending these meetings than attending technical talks and networking; committee meetings, including those of our regional and student chapters, provide opportunities to collaborate and exchange best practices for campus and community outreach. Our students’ past chapter work has included distributing weather radios to regional stakeholders to build Weather-Ready Communities, and our student AMS chapter continues to reach out to area schools.

The donation link is below. Thank you again for your support, and we’ll continue to introduce more students you’ve sent to these meetings that feed outreach back into our communities.

Meet Samuel, one of our Freshmen!

Sending our freshmen to these meetings is as important as sending our seniors and graduate students (the latter of whom are funded under our equally generous Warner Fund).

Meetings like these provide education, training, and networking to connect our rising stars with skills, internships, and summer research. Professional gatherings like these are key to getting on people’s radar and earning those coveted slots.

And away we go! It's time for our annual South Dakota Mines Raising for Rockers Drive.

This week, we look forward to introducing you to our fantastic students whom YOU sent to the professional society meetings and conferences so they can get their careers and professional connections started!

Each day before the big "'day' of giving" this coming Thursday, we'll introduce you to one of your future colleagues from just one of the meetings they got to experience thanks to your generosity.

It's YOU who makes these trips for our students possible, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
