A quick note about meal balance notifications!

Each Thursday morning, families with a negative meal balance receive an automated text/email from Student Nutrition. The message includes your student’s name and Other ID, a link to make an online payment (below), and information about applying for free/reduced-price meal benefits. Families also receive daily low-balance notifications through Skyward.

We know life gets busy! These reminders are simply one way we work to keep families informed and prevent balances from becoming unexpectedly large.

Most importantly: students are served lunch every school day, regardless of the balance on their meal account. We ask families to keep accounts current when able, and if you have questions about a balance, payment options or meal benefits, please reach out to our Student Nutrition office. We’re happy to help!

Today we offered a new speed-scratch recipe... TACO SOUP!

For those students who gave it a try, we received overall positive feedback!

Taco soup was one of five entrée choices available to high school students today, along with a hamburger, garlic french bread pizza, PB&J and sub sandwich.

As with any new recipe, we'll keep tweaking it. What did we learn today? A little more seasoning and smaller diced tomatoes. It's all part of introducing something new!

Thank you to our Student Nutrition staff for preparing and kudos to our students who were willing to try and provide feedback 👏

And yes... we realize it was 80 degrees outside today 😀 Apparently our September menu was more ready for fall than the weather was 🍂☀

🌟EMPLOYEE FEATURE - CONNIE HESTER🌟

Connie is starting her 9th year at Valley View Elementary, where she's part of an incredible team that cooks for nearly 400 elementary students each day.

Besides her coworkers, Connie says what she loves most about her job is interacting with the kids and getting to be an important part of their day.

And if you know Connie, that probably doesn't surprise you. She is truly one of the kindest people you'll meet, and the care she has for the students she serves shows every single day.

We're pretty lucky to have people like her who genuinely love what they do and the kids they do it for.

Yesterday, we sent nearly 500 whole, fresh apples to four of our elementary schools to serve with lunch, replacing individually packaged apple slices.

Background: Many of our elementary schools are satellite kitchens, meaning they don’t have the same kitchen, refrigeration and storage in a traditional production kitchen. Meals are prepared or packed at Central High School (by amazing CHS staff!) and delivered to these schools each day (by our awesome warehouse crew!), so adding hundreds of fresh apples takes some planning... and some space! Two years ago, we made the move to bulk vegetables, reducing individual packaging and giving students more flexibility in what and how much they take, and we're doing the same with fruit.

In addition to fresh apples, we're introducing bulk canned fruit, like peaches, so students can choose how much they’d like, while using less individual packaging.

The goal is to expand these options to other satellite schools soon! There are logistics to work through as we could be ordering, storing and transporting what could be up to 1,500-2,000 apples on any given day 🙂 but we’re excited to keep moving forward.

For now, we’re calling 500 fresh apples a pretty good start!

Today our high school students got to try something new: Buffalo Chicken Tater Tot Casserole - a new recipe prepared right in our kitchens.

We’ll admit, some students weren’t too sure about it at first glance. But those who were willing to give it a try? We heard lots of “that’s actually really good!” We will make a few tweaks to the recipe, but add a side salad, fresh peach, baked-in-house dinner roll and milk, and we’d say that makes for a pretty great lunch for $3.75!

We’re working to bring more speed-scratch cooking and new recipes into our kitchens, and trying something for the first time is part of the fun. We hope our students will keep being adventurous, giving new menu items a chance, and letting us know what they think!

A big thank you to our Student Nutrition team for trying new things and bringing more scratch-made flavor to school lunch for our students! 👏

We’re ready for our students! 🍏

At Elementary Open Houses, families got a taste of the fresh snacks students may receive through our Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program (FFVP)! (If you've never heard of it, FFVP gives students the opportunity to try a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day... at no cost to families!). The rainbow carrots were well received by many 😀🥕

As we get ready for the first day of school, a couple quick reminders:

Don't forget to submit your Free & Reduced-Price Meal Application (if applicable), add money to your student's meal account, and check out our menus.

🍏Back to school is almost here!

Before the first day (Monday, August 24th!), take a few minutes to get ready for the 2026–27 school year:

- Add money to your student’s meal account
- Complete a Free & Reduced Meal Application, if applicable
- Check out this year’s menus
- Submit special diet information, if needed

📣 New this year: South Dakota students who qualify for reduced-price meals will receive FREE breakfast and lunch! Families must still complete a new Free & Reduced Meal Application each school year to qualify.
