Pound the Stone
What was the secret, they wanted to know; in a thousand different ways they wanted to know The Secret. And not one of them was prepared, truly prepared to believe that it had not so much to do with chemicals and zippy mental tricks as with that most unprofound and sometimes heart-rending process of removing, molecule by molecule, the very tough rubber that comprised the bottoms of his training shoes. The Trial of Miles; Miles of Trials.

I love the start of each off-season as it's the best time to build team bonds, set new goals, recommit to the running lifestyle and perhaps even put in enough work to change the entire trajectory of your life.
The D-Crew has a motto, "Pound the Stone" which has to do with committing to the process through all of the ups and downs. We also tie our expectations to it...
|P| PUT in the work
|T| be a good TEAMMATE
|S| SHOW up
Do these everyday this summer and you'll get pretty good at running and our team will be great.
Personally, I love this time of year, because we get to start planting the seeds of performance through daily training so that when it comes time to bring our best, we're ready.
The emphasis changes throughout the year, but we're always training to be FAST enough for a 400 and FIT enough for a 5k.
If you haven't, sign up for our daily summer training program. It's open to 7th-12th graders from Stevens + feeder MS's and starts Monday, June 15th. Running has given us a lot, so we always offer off-season opportunities free of charge as a way to give back.
See you Monday.

🔥Rewriting the Raider Top 10🔥
Iris Birnbaum had one of the best seasons ever for a Stevens distance runner.
In her only 3200m of the season, Iris ran 11:16.22 (at altitude) to win the Track-O-Rama title here in Rapid City.
At the Howard Wood Relays, she broke the school record in the 1600m with an incredible final 300m to finish in 4:55.50.
A week later, she broke another barrier, this time the 60s barrier in the 400m (58.79).
Iris was hampered by an injury at the state meet, but showed tremendous grit with a come-from-behind Sprint Medley Anchor to put the girls into 2nd place and then ran a stunning 2:12.60 to pick up big points in the 800 meters.
Iris showed up & worked hard in the off-season to obliterate her previous PR's of 1:07/ 2:38 / 6:17.

Evelyn Hurley had a breakthrough performance at the state meet starting with her come-from-behind anchor on the 4x800 to move the girls into 2nd place.
The following day, she competed in one of the fastest girl's 800m races in history, finishing 3rd place and setting a new school record with her 2:11.78.
In her final race of the meet, she broke 5:00 in the 1600m and placed 3rd (4:58.85).
Evelyn made huge improvements throughout the season. She cut over 1min 30s from a 1600m "Team Time Trial" in August and improved 13s from her first 800m race this season.
Evelyn's 800m and 1600m are the fastest in the US for 7th graders.

Evan Perrigo ran a 24 second PR at the State Track meet to move into the #9 spot on the Raider All-Time list.
His 9:35.67 for 3200m from state is an outstanding mark and along with his 2:00 (800m) and 4:26 (1600m) make him one of the top freshmen distance runners in the region.

10 days before the state meet, Tate had never broken 2:00 for the 800m. At the Last Chance Meet, he dropped a 1:56 and then blew that mark out of the water with a 1:54.50 at the state meet. He now only sits behind Simeon Birnbaum on our school's 800m list.
In the 1600m at the state meet, Tate came in ranked outside of the medals, but pulled through with huge PR, running 4:20.27 to pick up points for the Raiders in 8th place.
Look out for Tate next season...
