Hello all! Hopefully this gets out to everyone. I apologize its a bit delayed but we need to get together for our first meeting! I'm not sure about everyone's schedule so please email me free times at your earliest convenience. You veterans of the club, please help me be sure we get all of our new marine science students in the fold as well!

Thank you all and I am looking forward to an awesome semester. We have a lot we can do!

The official Fall 2020 Marine Science Club meeting times will be the last Thursday of each month from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Keep in mind our meetings will typically only be 20 to 30 minutes, this time is blocked off just in case!

Congratulations to Colorado Northwestern Community College faculty Mario L. Sullivan for receiving the Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Board for Community Colleges & Occupational Education. Mario is the Instructor of Science/Oceanography at CNCC helping students build careers in marine sciences.

Additional Pre-Sand Hollow Details:

Mission Critical Personal Items:

Tent, sleeping bag, pillow, and perhaps a blanket (if you need any of these items checked out from outdoor rec, let me know via
Sunscreen
Flip-flops/shoes easy to get on and off
Towel
Swimsuit/light garments to wear under wet suit (any light, quick drying, athletic type fabrics)
Water bottle
Any personal snacks you might want although we will be stopping at gas stations too
PADI card (will need it to check out any additional tanks)
Hat
Sunglasses

Below is a list of things that you can forget but may not want to:

Cash: perhaps $20 to $40 or so
Any kind of a bag that you can easily store wet clothes and dive gear in
Camera if desired

If you like to fish, there will probably be room for just a little fishing tackle (a rod and a small box or two of lures). Even though you’ll have to get a Utah license, this lake has some dynamite bass and crappie fishing. You’ll see what I mean when we get in the water.

***Myself, Jay and/or Todd will be on campus Monday from around 10:00 AM until probably 1:00 or 2:00 PM if you would like to swing by and pick out a wet suit. Otherwise, we can do it when we get to the lake no problem***

Hey guys, a couple of announcements:

1.) I am not positive about our trip on Thursday. I need to be sure we have funding...

2.) We are in fact going to leave as early as possible next Tuesday for the Sand Hollow trip; for now, plan on meeting in the parking lot at 6:30 AM. We'll likely get bfast on the road

3.) Don't forget pizza in the lounge tomorrow! I will pick it up from K&G around noon or so.

Hello All

Just a reminder that the PTK highway clean up is this Sunday, April 14th. Everyone will meet up at the flagpoles no later than 10:00 AM. At that point, trash bags and safety vests will be handed out and rides and carpooling will likely get sorted out as well.

Please participate; this is an important community service event that PTK is gracious enough to put on and provides everyone an opportunity to pitch in and demonstrate pride for the community and institution!

Hello MS Club

Just a reminder that we have a little field trip planned for this Saturday morning (April 6th) at 9:00 AM. We will meet at the spot below Kenney. Our objectives will be to get at least three good transects of data including temperature, pH, total nitrogen, substrate, dissolved oxygen. We will also collect some samples for total dissolved solids and see how well we are able to get them dried out for good measurements. I will provide all of the sampling gear.

What you should absolutely bring:

1.) Backpack with pencils and paper.
2.) Sunglasses
3.) Spare shoes/socks
4.) A hat
5.) Sunscreen
6.) Water
7.) Snacks
8.) Camera
9.) Cell phone that probably won't do any good due to lack of service but who knows?
10.) A pleasant attitude and superb sense of humor.

The water is going to be cold. The waders we have are noninsulated so I highly recommend wearing some long johns underneath polyester work out pants or better yet, fleece pants if you have them. Avoid putting thick cottony clothing under waders if you can help it. If you take a tumble in the cold river wrapped in cotton trapped in waders, you're gonna have a bad time! The bottom line is you want to create an insulated layer under your waders that will be light and easy to dry.

Octopus are incredible creatures! They are masters of camouflage, have been know to use tools, are highly intelligent and so much more! This blue octopus is just one of many species.

The First Inaugural CNCC Marine Science Club Ice Fishing Trip:
Sunday, January 27th on Kenney Reservoir

-Equipment and bait provided but feel free to bring your own!

-YOU MUST PURCHASE A VALID FISHING LICENSE to participate (you can by an annual or day permit; sold locally at True Value)

-Bring plenty of warm clothes, hand and foot warmers (I'll have a few extra if needed) and your luckiest charm so we have a good bite.

-Bring water and a snack/lunch and a thermos of hot liquid (coffee, tea, etc...)

-We may get into a species of fish knows as "mountain whitefish" (Prosopium williamsoni); they are good eating and no limit (see CPW regulations here https://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/RulesRegs/Brochure/fishing.pdf)

-We will all park at the boat ramp parking lot; I'll be there by first light drilling holes and trying to find fish. Meet up at that place anytime between first light and noon.
