There are truths about human relationships that deserve to be stated plainly: shame is not a healthy tool for teaching, correction, connection, or growth. In short, shame is not a healthy tool under any circumstances – period.

Historically, shame was widely used to control behavior. In homes, schools, religious institutions, and workplaces, humiliation and embarrassment were often mistaken for discipline or moral instruction. Thus, people learned through fear, fear of exposure, criticism, rejection, or ridicule. We have to wonder what they really learned, other than fear.

Though times have changed, remnants of this approach still linger in everyday life...

The Illusion of Objectivity: What Leaders Must Learn to See

We like to believe we can be objective—especially about ourselves. Under the right conditions, with enough discipline, enough experience, enough intention… surely we can see ourselves clearly.

Self-awareness, perhaps, is the thread that has been quietly weaving through them all.

I find myself aligned with much of Dalal’s assertion. Effective leaders do scan themselves. They examine their fears. They question their assumptions. They search for blind spots, aspirations, and patterns that shape their choices. Yes to all of that.

Where I hesitate is the word “objectively.”

Because the truth is: objectivity, in its purest form, is not available to us....
