Meet Catherine Langley — recent UNM-Taos grad, former geologist turned artist. Her exhibit explores the thinking behind her land art piece going up on the trail behind campus: eight adobe spheres arranged in the pattern of the Pleiades, echoing our new observatory. Made from local materials, the spheres are designed to erode naturally back into the earth over time.

Matilda Trujillo turns personal experience into support for local youth

For Matilda Trujillo, supporting young people is personal. A current UNM student and Taos Alive youth prevention mentor, Trujillo works with youth in the community to help them develop skills for coping with anxiety and depression and avoiding substance misuse.

Her motivation comes from her own experience. Trujillo knows what it is like to struggle with anxiety and depression and wishes she had someone to guide her toward healthier ways of coping when she was younger.

“I want to give students the opportunity to look deep within themselves and see that they can do it,” Trujillo said. “They are valuable. They are seen and loved. They can overcome hard things.”

Trujillo also brings professional training to her work. She graduated from The University of New Mexico-Taos Community Health Worker program in May 2025. She credits the program with giving her practical skills while also helping her better understand herself and grow personally.

Today, she uses those skills and her own experiences to meet people where they are and help them build on their strengths.

For Trujillo, the greatest reward is seeing people recognize their own potential and then use that strength to help others.
