NTC and PTC thermistors use the same basic circuitโbut their resistance curves work in opposite directions.
NTC: temperature rises โ resistance drops.
PTC: temperature rises โ resistance increases.
Both can use a 5V reference, pull-up resistor, and voltage-divider circuit. But if you don't know which type you're testing, the voltage reading can be easy to misinterpret.
PTC thermistors are especially useful in self-regulating heating applications because increasing resistance reduces current as temperature rises.
Here's the technician question: When you see a high or low sensor voltage, do you first identify whether the circuit is NTC or PTC?
