NTC and PTC thermistors use the same basic circuitโ€”but their resistance curves work in opposite directions.

NTC: temperature rises โ†’ resistance drops.

PTC: temperature rises โ†’ resistance increases.

Both can use a 5V reference, pull-up resistor, and voltage-divider circuit. But if you don't know which type you're testing, the voltage reading can be easy to misinterpret.

PTC thermistors are especially useful in self-regulating heating applications because increasing resistance reduces current as temperature rises.

Here's the technician question: When you see a high or low sensor voltage, do you first identify whether the circuit is NTC or PTC?

Can you calculate manifold vacuum using your MAP and BARO readings?

Oscar Gomez breaks it down with a simple formula technicians can remember in the bay:

BARO โˆ’ MAP = Vacuum

For example, 29 inHg BARO โˆ’ 9 inHg MAP = 20 inHg of manifold vacuum.

This quick calculation can help you better understand what your scan tool is telling you and build confidence when diagnosing engine performance concerns. Oscar also explains how altitude changes your readings.

Why does an NTC temperature sensor show HIGH voltage when cold and LOW voltage when hot?

It comes down to resistance.

An NTC thermistor has an inverse relationship with temperature: cold = high resistance, hot = low resistance.

The sensor and the PCM's pull-up resistor create a voltage divider. When cold, the high sensor resistance keeps the signal closer to the 5V reference. When hot, resistance drops and the signal moves closer to ground.

This same principle is used in ECT, IAT, fuel temperature, and other sensors.

The ohmmeter says the circuit is good. But the component still doesn't work. Now what?

That's where continuity testing can fool a technician.

A circuit may show near-zero resistance with no load, yet develop a major voltage drop once real current starts flowing. That's why continuity testing is useful for quick triageโ€”but load testing and voltage drop testing reveal how the circuit actually performs under operating conditions.

The best technicians don't abandon one test for another. They understand what question each test can answer.

The PCM commanded it. But did the injector actually do it?

That's the diagnostic question technicians need to ask.

A commanded injector pulse width only tells you what the PCM requested. It doesn't prove the injector physically opened, closed, or delivered the correct amount of fuel.

That's where a lab scope can reveal what scan data can'tโ€”including the injector's flyback pattern and clues about pintle closure.

Oscar Gomez teaches technicians to stop confusing commanded operation with confirmed operation. That mindset can make a major difference when diagnosing fuel delivery problems.
