Jason (“Tom”) Helmick
(February 17, 1970 – May 2, 2026)

It is with great sadness that we inform our co-workers and clients, past and present, of the passing of Tom Helmick. Tom was a director at Jones Reading & Math Clinics in Upland, Pomona, and Rancho Cucamonga for nearly two decades. In 2014, Tom and long-time friend and co-worker Brian McRae took over the Rancho Cucamonga location and founded M&H Tutoring. In 2016, Tom stepped away from the business due to health issues, but returned as a tutor for many years. Tom was a volunteer reading teacher at Magnolia Elementary School in Upland, served as a substitute teacher in the Ontario-Montclair School District for several years, and was a tutor for more than twenty-five years. Tom's passion was reading, and helping make learning easy and fun for students of all ages.

Hello to all of our new and returning students. We hope you have been enjoying the summer!

You may have noticed many costs going up throughout the year in our community, and this has much to do with skyrocketing commercial rent rates. To put it into perspective, the total rent increase from 2014 to 2022 was 14.3%, but from 2022 to 2023 the rate has increased 26%. We do our best to keep our fees as low as possible, but due to this and other cost increases, we must raise our tutoring rate to $50 per hour starting in July. Current summer packages will not be affected by this increase. We thank you for your understanding, and look forward to helping everyone succeed in the new school year!

Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Holiday Season!

Schools have resumed classes, and tutoring sessions will resume tomorrow, January 5th.

M&H Tutoring Re-opening Update!!!

We are now ready to schedule appointments and tutor students!

Appointments can be arranged by phone or email. Due to our currently limited office hours, I recommend contacting us by email *and* by phone to ensure the quickest response time. Our email address is mandhtutoring@gmailcom. Our phone number is (909)483-8075.

We will now be offering remote tutoring via Skype, and we may add other platforms (Zoom, Google Hangouts, etc.) at a later date. Appointments for remote tutoring must be made by email. Students who are sick will be limited to remote tutoring sessions.

While remote tutoring may be convenient for some, in-person tutoring remains the most efficient and effective method of teaching students. To ensure everyone's safety, all tutors will be wearing masks, and sanitizing their work stations before each tutoring session. The following additional requirements, which must be followed, apply to students and parents visiting the office:

1. All students and parents visiting the office are required to wear masks.

2. All students must wash their hands or use hand sanitizer upon entering the office, and we ask that parents waiting in the front area do so as well.

3. All students are required to bring their own pens and pencils (and other commonly used items) so as to mitigate any potential spreading of diseases/illnesses through the communal use of such items. We will still provide scratch paper.

4. NO food or drinks are allowed. Please partake of any drinks or snacks before entering the office.

5. Once your tutoring session is finished, please leave the office in a timely manner so as to limit contact with other students/parents.

With these added safeguards, I am confident we will be able to provide a safe environment for everyone without impacting the quality of our services.

Based on the current state of the virus, we will be extending the closure of the office until May 1st. At that time we will reassess the situation, but we very much hope to be reopening at that time. We all miss our students, and hope everyone is staying on top of their studies to the best of their ability.

I hope this message finds you all in good health.

Due to the Governor of California's order to close all nonessential business, M&H TUTORING will be closed until April 13. We will reassess the current situation at that time, and decide when it would be best to reopen to serve our students. As a result of school closures, many students will be behind on their studies for the year. How well students' schools are integrated with online instruction will be a key factor as to the degree of this effect. When things return more to normal, we plan to hit the ground running, and will be offering more summer school hours than usual to help make up for students' lack of in-person instruction in school.

We will be out of the office during this time, but calls will be forwarded to us at home (expect 10+ rings), and we can always be reached by email. For those who have outstanding balances on their accounts for February or March, please contact us at [email protected]. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask.

Recently, San Bernardino County and Los Angeles County have announced that most schools will be closed through April 5, and will tentatively resume the school year on April 6. During this time, M&H Tutoring will remain open to serve our students, as many schools will still be assigning work online.

As we have always had many younger students, we are ever mindful of keeping our work areas safe and clean - especially during cold and flu season. Due to the current situation with the Coronavirus (COVID-19), we are taking additional steps to insure the safety of all those who visit our office.
