An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is a portable device used during certain cardiac emergencies, particularly when someone is in cardiac arrest.

What does an AED do?
An AED analyzes the heart’s electrical rhythm and determines whether a shock is appropriate. If a shockable rhythm is detected, the AED will instruct the rescuer to deliver a shock.

When should you use one?
If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, call 911, begin CPR, and get an AED as soon as possible.

Are AEDs safe to use?
Yes. AEDs are designed to guide rescuers through the process with clear voice and visual instructions. The device will only recommend a shock when it detects a rhythm that can benefit from defibrillation.

Do you need to be an EMT to use an AED?
No. AEDs are designed for both trained professionals and lay rescuers. You don’t need to be an EMT to use one.

Remember: An AED doesn’t replace CPR. Start CPR immediately, use the AED as soon as it arrives, and follow its instructions until EMS takes over.

Does CPR hurt?

It can. CPR is forceful by design, and chest compressions can cause rib or sternum fractures, bruising, and other injuries.

But when someone is in cardiac arrest, those injuries are a secondary concern. CPR is keeping blood flowing to the brain and vital organs while you work to restore a heartbeat.

You may hear a crack or feel a rib move while performing compressions. Don’t stop. Keep doing high-quality CPR.

A broken rib can heal. Cardiac arrest without CPR can be fatal.

What’s the difference between CPR classes?

Not all CPR certifications are the same, and choosing the right one depends on your needs.

American Heart Association (AHA) BLS
The most commonly required certification for healthcare professionals, including EMTs, nurses, medical assistants, dental staff, and other healthcare workers.

American Red Cross (ARC) BLS
A nationally recognized healthcare provider course that covers CPR, AED use, and emergency response skills. Accepted by many employers and healthcare organizations.

CPR & First Aid
