Want to go to PA or medical school? Becoming an EMT can be a great place to start.

Working on an ambulance gives you real hands-on patient care experience while building skills in assessment, communication, emergency care, and working alongside other healthcare professionals.

EMT hours may also count toward clinical or patient-care experience for PA school, depending on the program.

It’s more than just getting hours — it’s real experience that can help prepare you for a career in medicine.

We spent the weekend providing first aid at the Norco Rodeo, and one of the biggest things we saw was heat-related illness. With long hours outside, direct sun, and physical activity, it’s important to know the warning signs and what to do.

☀️ Tips to prevent heat-related injuries:
• Stay hydrated throughout the day — don’t wait until you’re thirsty
• Take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned area
• Wear lightweight, breathable clothing
• Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day when possible
• Never ignore symptoms like dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, or confusion

🚨 If someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, has a seizure, or has very hot skin, call 911 immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency.

Whether you’re at a rodeo, working outside, or enjoying a summer event, knowing how to recognize heat-related illness can make a huge difference.

Here’s the part of the job you won’t always hear about.

Not every 911 call is a cardiac arrest, major accident, or life-or-death emergency.

Sometimes it’s a small cut that needs a few bandages. A minor fall. Someone who twisted their ankle. A kid who bumped their head. Or a patient who simply needs reassurance and a little help.

These calls might not make the news, but they still matter. Being an EMT means showing up, assessing the situation, providing care, and treating every patient with the same professionalism—no matter how big or small the call may seem.

Because for that patient, it matters.

Is a traction splint painful?

It can be during application, but once properly applied, a traction splint can actually reduce pain from a femur fracture.

Traction helps counteract muscle spasms and shortening around the fracture, which can provide significant pain relief.

For EMTs: remember, traction should be gentle and controlled—not used to force the bone back into place. Always reassess distal pulse, motor function, and sensation before and after application.

Ever wondered what an NPA (Nasopharyngeal Airway) looks like and why EMTs use one?

An NPA is a soft, flexible airway device that is inserted through the nose to help keep a patient’s airway open when they’re unable to maintain it on their own. It’s commonly used on patients with a decreased level of consciousness who still have a gag reflex, helping improve airflow while providers continue to monitor and manage the patient.

Important: This video shows one of our EMT students practicing NPA insertion on his brother, who is a paramedic, under the direct supervision of our instructors. This is a controlled educational demonstration—not a real patient encounter—and students only perform these skills after receiving instruction and while being closely monitored.

Hands-on training is one of the most valuable parts of becoming an EMT. Learning these skills in a safe, supervised environment helps prepare students for real emergencies when every second counts.
