Our Year I Construction students are building a strong foundation in power tool safety and proper equipment operation. After completing their testing on power tools, Instructor Jeff Harrison demonstrated the proper procedures for safely operating the bandsaw, upright sander, and oscillating sander, along with the necessary safety precautions.

Students then put their knowledge into practice by shaping pieces of wood and using the sanders to smooth and finish the edges.

These hands-on skills provide a great foundation for the larger projects and advanced skills they’ll take on in the future!

Our Educator Prep students had the opportunity to welcome Madison Blankenship, field supervisor for the Enhancing Mental Health Provider Opportunities with Educational Resources in Schools (EMPOWERS), to our classroom for an important and meaningful discussion on school based mental health services.
As our students study Human Growth & Development, understanding how a child’s experiences, environment, and relationships can impact their development is so important. Madison helped our students see how childhood experiences can influence a child’s emotional well-being, behavior, relationships, and overall development.
Most importantly, our students learned about the role educators can play in creating safe, supportive, and caring environments for children who may be experiencing challenges outside of the classroom. Sometimes, a caring teacher can be the person who makes all the difference.
We are so thankful for professionals like Madison who take the time to share their knowledge and experiences with our future educators. These conversations help our students connect what they learn in the classroom to the real-world experiences they may encounter in their future careers.

We want to make the public aware that AirCare and emergency responders will be at Smith County Career Center this morning as part of a planned emergency response training exercise.

This activity is designed to provide our students with a real-world, hands-on learning experience and an opportunity to observe emergency response procedures in action.

Please be advised that this is only a training exercise. There is no emergency at SCCC.

We appreciate our emergency responders for partnering with us to provide valuable learning experiences for our students!

Congratulations to our Smith County Career Center UAS Technologies students who recently earned their FAA TRUST (The Recreational UAS Safety Test) certification! 🚁🎉

Students learned important information about drone safety, FAA regulations, airspace, and responsible flight operations before successfully completing their certification.

Earning their TRUST certification gives students a strong foundation as they continue their UAS training and prepare for the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, which allows pilots to conduct commercial drone operations.

This is another important step in preparing our Smith County Career Center students to become safe, knowledgeable, and career-ready UAS pilots.

Students in our Law & Public Safety program recently had the opportunity to learn firsthand about the fast-paced world of emergency dispatch from longtime dispatcher Tina Saranthus.
With experience serving as a dispatcher for the Smith County Sheriff’s Department and other agencies, Mrs. Saranthus shared valuable insight into the responsibilities, challenges, and rewards of working in emergency communications.
Students are also learning about radio traffic and effective communication in public safety and had the opportunity to hear and see these skills in action. Instructor John Darden and Mrs. Saranthus brought the experience to life through mock emergency calls, demonstrating how a real dispatch call may unfold and how dispatchers communicate with officers in the field.

Students in our Business, Marketing & Finance and Information Technology programs recently visited Southern Pine Electric’s headquarters in Taylorsville for an inside look at the many career opportunities available within the electric cooperative industry.
Students learned about Southern Pine Electric’s history, how the cooperative began, and how it operates today. They also explored career opportunities in business, marketing, communications, accounting, human resources, information technology, cybersecurity, and more!
Throughout the visit, Southern Pine employees took time to speak with students, share their experiences, answer questions, and encourage them as they consider their future careers. Students also toured the headquarters and had the opportunity to see various departments in action.
Smith County Career Center sincerely thanks Southern Pine Electric and its employees for their generous hospitality and for investing in the future of our students!

Our Sports Medicine students have been exploring the importance of therapeutic services in sports medicine, athletics, and healthcare. To expand their learning beyond the classroom, students recently visited Performance Therapy to gain firsthand knowledge of various therapeutic modalities.
Students discussed treatment options for different injuries, including cryotherapy, thermotherapy, dry needling, electrical stimulation, and traction. They compared the different modalities and sensations while exploring short- and long-term treatment goals for various injuries.
Students also had the opportunity to speak with Makayla Eiland, DPT, about the education, licensure, certifications, and job responsibilities associated with careers as a Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant.
Now, students will take what they learned and apply it to their own research as they develop sports-specific treatment plans designed to support the return-to-play process.
A great example of how hands-on learning helps our students connect classroom concepts to real-world healthcare careers!

Our UAS students put their creativity, engineering, and teamwork to the test by designing and building their own paper “drones” from everyday materials!

Then came the fun part—flight time! 🚁 Students competed for:

A fun, hands-on challenge that brought teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity to life!
