💜 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 💜

On June 15th, we recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the dignity, safety, and well-being of older adults.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including , , , and . By raising awareness, checking in on vulnerable seniors, and speaking up when something doesn’t seem right, we can all play a role in creating safer communities for older adults.

In the United States, if you suspect elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation, you can contact:

* Adult Protective Services (APS): Each state has a local APS office that investigates reports of abuse involving vulnerable adults.
* National Eldercare Locator: 1-800-677-1116 (Monday–Friday) — They can connect you with your local APS office and other elder support services.
* Emergency situations: Call 911 immediately if an older adult is in immediate danger.

When in a new place, they have to remember directions, keep up with schedules, to changes, and unfamiliar situations. For some older adults, those everyday travel tasks can make subtle cognitive changes more noticeable.
Things like confusion, trouble following conversations, disorientation, or increased frustration may become more apparent.
In that way, travel can offer families and caregivers an important window into brain health. At the same time, travel can still be enjoyable, meaningful, and restorative for older adults.

Wednesday was a meaningful day at the North Carolina Legislature advocating for home care and the importance of caring for individuals with dignity at home.

Patti Williams had wonderful conversations with NC Representative Cynthia Ball and NC Senator Julie Mayfield, both of whom shared personal experiences of family caregiving. She also spoke with Sheila Settles, wife of Senator Eddie Settle, about caregiving and family support during NC Home Care Advocacy Day.

A bonus moment of the day was attending a press conference where Ronan shared the benefits of home care during her recovery after surviving a near-fatal drunk driving accident.

It was a great day of advocacy and meaningful conversations.
