Mr. Ron Carson will be the closing speaker for this year's African Americans in Western North Carolina and Southern Appalachia Symposium. Along with his wife Jill, Mr. Carson is the founder of the Appalachian African-American Cultural Center in Pennington Gap, Virginia. Their work was recently feature in the New York Times.

In addition to his work with the cultural center in Pennington Gap, Mr. Caron is also the CEO of Carson Black Lung Education and Research Center in Virginia and Kentucky.
Along with Lonnie Bunch, the Secretary of the Smithsonian, Mr. Carson is the Co-Chair of the 400 Years of African-American History Commission. Dr. Rochelle Brandon, MD will give the afternoon address for this year's African Americans in Western North Carolina and Southern Appalachia Symposium. Dr. Cicero Fain III will be the opening speaker for this year's African Americans in Western North Carolina and Southern Appalachia Symposium. Dr. Fain is a professor of history at the College of southern Maryland and author of several books. He most recent book titled "Black Huntington: An Appalachian Story," examines the development of the African American community in Huntington, West Virginia.
