Last week, NCAFP leaders attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine facility in Fayetteville. The ceremony officially opened the new medical school and celebrated its students, leaders, and ambitions to improve the region’s health care. This summer, it will welcome its first class of medical students.
NCAFP member and Founding Dean Dr. Hershey Bell summed up the school’s mission beautifully during his speech at the ceremony: “This building represents vision, sacrifice, partnership, generosity, and years of extraordinary work by countless people who believe this community deserves its own medical school. Years from now, people won't remember the square footage of the building or the specifics of the technology, but they'll remember the physician who sat beside them after a devastating diagnosis — the physician who listened, the physician who stayed late, the physician who cared. And that's the purpose of this building.”
Congratulations to Dr. Bell, as well as the school’s Founding Family Medicine Division Head (and past NCAFP president) Dr. Chuck Rich, and all the other leaders who have worked to make this new medical school possible!

Two reasons we have such top-notch members:
1. They learn from the best at events like the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Family Medicine Advocacy Summit!
2. They understand that the voice of North Carolina family physicians matter at the federal level too!
We're glad for Summit attendees like NCAFP President Dr. Benjamin "Frankie" Simmons, AAFP Board member (and past NCAFP president) Dr. Shannon Dowler, NCAFP Resident Director Dr. Irina Balan, and many others. The past few days, they have been advocating for Family Medicine with Congressional lawmakers for payment reform and administrative burden reductions in Washington, DC, and we are glad for their good work there!

Last weekend, over 180 NCAFP members gathered in person and online to learn actionable Family Medicine CME during the 2026 Summer Symposium! “It was such a pleasure to host all the attendees who joined us for a day of meaningful connection and timely, high-value CME,” said NCAFP Director of CME & Events Kathryn Atkinson, CMP. “It was a exceptional program, and I am so grateful to Program Chair Dr. Garett Franklin and the many expert guest faculty who made it all possible!”

Aside from bringing them fantastic and ready-to-use clinical training, the NCAFP Summer Symposium also gave the members who came in person great camaraderie and easy socializing! Every chance to reunite as fellow family physicians is a great time.

Meet Dr. Carlos Ramos! Dr. Ramos is a first-year resident at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Residency in Family Medicine in Wilmington.
Dr. Ramos undertook a difficult path to Family Medicine that confirmed how much he
wanted it. After beginning college near Wilmington, he was so unhappy and uncertain
that he left the U.S. and returned to Mexico City, where he was born. “I felt like there was
nothing left for me here,” Dr. Ramos says. But during his stay here, his maternal
grandmother pulled him aside for a heart-to-heart that changed his trajectory for good.
She told me, ‘You’re a very capable man. You need to go back to the U.S. and make the
future that your mother would’ve wanted for you there.’ That really got me onto the
straight and narrow path where I am now.”

NCAFP member Dr. Victoria Boggiano shared her well-earned insight into how American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)'s FUTURE Conference helps medical students enter Family Medicine! In a new Q&A with the AAFP, Dr. Boggiano recounted her long history of attending the conference as a medical student, resident, and now family physician. For students who aren’t yet sure which specialty they want to enter, “FUTURE is vital because it helps maintain family medicine,” Dr. Boggiano says. “It attracts and encourages diversity, depth, breadth. It’s unlike any other conference students, residents and educators will ever have the opportunity to attend.”

One of the most important member benefits that we give our members is direct and consistent participation in NC health care policy. But the benefit goes both ways: we get to have our members join us for White Coat Wednesday.
