We all put on drag everyday. Whatever drag you decide is up to you... but its drag, regardless. Some of you wear business drag, performance drag, church drag, shopping drag, cleaning drag, sleeping drag, causal drag, formal drag, bo***ge and fe**sh drag, diva drag, and stud drag... at the base of all that is gender drag. Some of us decide to be feminine in our fashion and some masculine. Some of us blur those lines on a regular basis and enjoy playing with the sometimes not-so-subtle nuances of suggested gender stereotypes. But one thing is true... we ALL do drag of some form. We all do it in life... and some of us also do it on a stage. Either way, your drag is up to you... what is your drag today? Sterling Maxwell, the Triangle area's original Drag King and Gender Performer, will be conducting the class on drag and gender performance. Sterling's School of Drag will focus on the expression of each's own individual gender identity and exploration of all variations and possibilities. Sterling's School of Drag instructor:

Sterling's alter-ego in real life, is Veda E. Renfrow, who is an artist, educator, performer, filmmaker and collector of various things that have no obvious monetary value. Veda has been genderfcuking since 1987 in the Triangle area. As Sterling, Veda has performed all over the country and Canada as well. While performing as Sterling at festivals, conferences and special events, Veda has also produced and facilitated Drag/Gender, Media Literacy, Pop Culture, and Theatre Production workshops and lectures. Some of Veda's video works have been screened at film festivals nationally and internationally. Veda made a video about her drag character, which was screened at the NCGLFF in 2008. The video called "Who is Sterling Maxwell?" takes a look at who Sterling is and how assumptions can be dangerous when it comes to gender and freedom of expression. Sterling Maxwell, with Veda's help, hopes to spread the knowledge of exploring one's ideas, concepts and misunderstandings about gender in order to set more minds and bodies free in expressing one's self... be it in life or on the stage.

Dangerous happenings in politics…

TN passed a drag ban. Now, Ohio is attempting to as well, but it’s worse than that. They are also attempting to erase trans people from public spaces.

Having been performing here for over 35 years now, I have seen NC try something very similar years ago. They tried to classify Drag as “adult entertainment” - they will try this again.

But here is the thing… Burlesque is not too far behind if this is what’s happening. I need to know you all see this and understand this. It’s not enough to just be “entertainers” right now. You have a stage, you have a voice, you have followers. Use them all to spread awareness and get others to use their stage, voice and followers to spread it even more. If Drag goes down in NC, Burlesque is not far behind.

Drag IS political.

Burlesque IS political.

Please do not pretend we are safe in NC.

Thank you.

We are finally back to school and taking it up a notch in 2024!

30+ year professional gender & burlesque performer, Sterling Maxwell - also known as The LadyMan, believes its time to step up and share the knowledge they have acquired over their many decades of professional gigs. First starting off as a dancer & burlesque performer in a le***an club in the 80s performing as Veda, they explored the idea of combining drag and burlesque (also called "Draglesque") in 2004 to stretch the imagination and expectations of audiences from NC to CA with helping other Drag Kings, Queens and performers along the way. Through Sterling's School of Drag & Burlesque, Sterling (he/him) & Veda (they/them) combine their experience with technical, creative, and people skills to offer a special understanding of the performance space, inclusion, and visibility.
