For over 2 years, it has been difficult for children to learn the social meaning of facial expressions as those around them masked. To help catch up on this important skill, we have moved our most popular facial expression game, Faceland, to a free web resource at do2learn.com. In over 10 years since created it has been used by thousands of children in classrooms. The program has 6 emotion schools that each cover one basic expression, providing a guide on how to divide and interpret parts of a face. There are games that practice each expression individually and in combination using thousands of real faces. All schools are now online under the Social Skills blue bar and the games are being added as completed. While checking out Faceland, try the Print Activities in the same section, which can be done in a classroom without computer access, or as homework.

Understanding how to break down complex skills, such as reading emotions on a face, can be problematic for many people. Face Clues is designed to help by dividing the face into distinct areas and linking the positions of each of those areas to particular emotions.

Introducing GoFAR!

The GoFAR program teaches self-regulation and adapting to situations. These are important skills children need to function in their daily lives. Using GoFAR, your child will learn how to organize and think through problems carefully to lessen impulsive or hurried responses.

Any child with self-regulation issues would benefit from the ideas behind GoFAR. The methods used in this program have been used for many years at Emory University to help children with FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders) and other effects of prenatal exposures where there are difficulties regulating arousal. Studies have found it effective in helping children make connections between events and improve behavior.

Behavior management strategies are very useful to to use in the home environment as well. As you implement this plan, it is important to carefully monitor the situation and collect data on the behavior, so you can objectively determine whether the plan is having its intended effect. Keep in mind that behavior management plans often undergo minor (and sometimes major) adjustments along the way.
