Creative Journeys in Art with Ms. Jackie

Today may be the first official day of summer vacation, but our students have already taken an amazing trip to Jamaica…without ever leaving the classroom!

As part of our end-of-year art lesson, "My Dream Summer Vacation," students worked collaboratively to research, design, and build a tactile replica of Jamaica. After learning about the island's rich culture, beautiful landscapes, wildlife, music, food, and history, the class unanimously chose Jamaica as their dream destination.
Our young travelers created four major features of the island: The Rainforest, The Beach, The Ocean, and The Mountains.

One of the most exciting parts of the project was creating a waterfall inspired by Jamaica's famous Dunn's River Falls. Students had a blast designing the flowing water, selecting materials for texture, and watching the waterfall come to life as a centerpiece of their island paradise.

With the creative support of Mrs. Amber and the magic of 3-D printing, students added incredible details including: Frogs, Dolphins, Boats, Fish, Monkeys, A beach hut, Beach furniture, Flip-flops, A cooler…and many other fun vacation accessories! Their attention to detail and creative use of materials helped bring Jamaica to life in a way that was both beautiful and accessible.
The project encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, research skills, and hands-on learning while giving students an opportunity to explore another country's geography and culture through tactile art.

Now for the big question... What do you think are the chances that one of our students might actually visit Jamaica someday? After seeing the excitement, imagination, and curiosity that went into this project, we'd say the odds look pretty good!

From the Blue Mountains to the sandy beaches, our students proved that learning could take us anywhere.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this memorable end-of-year project possible.

If you could take your dream summer vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go? Tell us in the comments!

Graduation 2026!!

Dear GMS Family,

As we come to the close of another school year, I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to every member of the Governor Morehead School for the Blind community.

Today’s graduation ceremony was a wonderful celebration of our students, their accomplishments, and the journey that brought them to this milestone. It was a beautiful reminder of the purpose behind everything we do at GMS. Watching our graduates cross the stage and celebrate their achievements was a proud moment for all of us, and it reflected the collective effort, care, and dedication of this entire school community.

There is a quote that says, “Service is love made actionable,” and I cannot think of a better description of the work that happens at GMS each day.

At GMS, service is not simply a responsibility; it is a reflection of compassion, commitment, and belief in our students. Every role matters. Every contribution matters. Every act of support, whether large or small, helps create a community where students can learn, grow, and succeed.

I hope each of you takes time this summer to rest, recharge, and reflect on the tremendous difference you have made in the lives of our students and families.

It is an honor to serve alongside you.

With gratitude,
Mr. Daniel Simmons, M.Ed., COMS, TSVI
School Principal

The Boy Who harnessed the Wind

Making connections through learning by doing:

Our class just finished The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.

Tuesday was all about engaging in actives that the main character engaged in during his day to day life.

Students got to shuck corn, cook it, eat it, participate in a drum circle, and a musical review of the book, and learn some of the Malawian national anthem!

The beautiful fruit bowls featured fresh cantaloupe, blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries — all carefully prepared by our Food Service Team and beautifully designed by our awesome Nurse Goode! The students absolutely loved every bite and enjoyed the fun, healthy celebration.

And let’s be honest… Nurse Goode looked GREAT in her Food Service apron while serving our students with love, smiles, and positive energy! 💙🍓

Of course, the celebration would not have been complete without Mr. Jonathan jumping in for the picture and showing support for the fun! 📸🙌🏾

Thank you, Nurse Goode, for helping make Wellness Wednesday exciting, healthy, festive, and full of Charger pride during Graduation Week!
