I absolutely loved hit country music singer songwriter from the 90's era Tracy Lawrence came to New Bern, North Carolina, but that doesn't mean I have to like anything said about war, the President or the candidate they gave the mic to from the gop. I felt the same way when I heard the left doing politics from the music stage.

When politicians are on the campaign trail this fall and they tell you the same old, same old like, " We're cutting costs..." make sure you ask how costs are cut.

What exactly was cut? What money was saved? Was payroll shrunk?

Adding more wasteful government programs which redistribute other people's money isn't a savings at all. It's an expense to run another useless agency and it's socialism leaning into communism taking from one group to give to another.

Pretty soon there'll be no private property and we can have the communism the left so dearly desires.

I filled out renewal papers for my Conceal Carry permit in April 2026 (something I should never need to ask the government for permission for to begin with) and just received a call from Sheriff Chip Hughes informing me it was finally ready days ago.

The cashier tells me she needs a minute. I go to the restroom. I return , she flags me down. She says, " I didn't know where you went." I said, "pit stop." She pulls out a 2" stack of small approved permits on a heap of papers.

When I filed renewal paperwork, the auto-generated date available for a notarization of government paperwork was on the date my permit expired. I called to ask for in-person processing.

Denied.
I sent a records request in June 2026 to ask how backed up they were.
Unfulfilled.

Moving on... the permit...

Keep in mind the State of North Carolina is competent insothat it sends NC Drivers Licenses via the mail.

However, the sheriff department staff refuse to place the permit in the mail because 1) it can get lost, 2) a Sheriff must sign it according to made up Craven County laws, 3) the recipient must sign it in front of a cashier another made up law 4) who then takes her time to laminate it another made up law. That's not what gives the permit any power. The permit is foolish to begin with.

The cashier told me to sign the permit and give it back to her and I did not, I thanked her, I walked away and said "have a good day." Then another government man called out, "ma'am?"

I said "have a good day."

I don't sign my credit card, yet it still works.

I don't sign my ssn card and my number still works.

I'm certainly not waiting any longer on a stupid, ridiculous piece of paper that costs me around $85 every 5 years , when the process should have been seamless for a CCW renewal.

Instead of making administrative processes streamlined, I see Sheriff Hughes on the news attempting to criminalize h**p this morning. Laws don't stop criminals.

I see campaign pens at the Sheriff Dept for his reelection this afternoon. This is supposed to be one of the good sheriffs? Are people blind? The law has parameters regarding how long a Sheriff has to process and I do not see it was followed. I suspect there are many more permit holders still waiting long after the lawful period for the Sheriff dept to issue permits and renewals. Disappointing.

Imagine your neighbor feeds cats. The cats bother the neighborhood. The neighbors lodge complaints. Is the person providing care to a cat a criminal, or a humanitarian?

The municpality of New Bern has an ordinance on the books, however, someone charged with enforcement picks and chooses which ordinances are enforced. This is poor governance.

Instead of hiring anyone else, giving any more raises or benefits, the Animal Control Department should be out in the community educating about the unintended consequences of feeding animals. I think A.C. would also be picking up any animal not spade /neutered and taking it to a county or state facility for sterilization.

This issue drags on for years. Talk about a Cat Dragnet.

Is a feral cat domesticated? These are things to think about when considering throwing your neighbor under the bus to get rid of an animal that's a nuisance.

Animal Control should have intervened long ago. Yet the issue is ignored for years , ppl are upset and the can gets kicked down the road.

Classic government. Hope you got out the popcorn at least.

Is Craven County Sheriff's Department above the law?

If law states a Sheriff has a specific timeframe to process permits, then why would it not be done? There should be no backlog on rights. The law is not just for residents and no one should be waiting twice the amount of lawful time to be processed for a permit renewal.

Something is severely wrong with Craven County Government, the blatant lack of leadership and inability to serve residents.

Why does the government need to use your money to surveil you constantly while never cutting spending on Law Enforcement Officers?

Yes, people have phones with cameras on their person, but they are not forced to pay for a thing they didn't ask for.

Yes people have doorbell cameras. Those are voluntary transactions.

The government has crept in with mass surveillance and has not asked permission to tape you as you drive by cameras.

The government scans your license plates without having any evidence you've ever committed a crime.

You're treated as guilty before ever having your "day in court." Sometimes, you get to court and a judge seeking re-election never gives you a fair shake, or a chance to ever explain why you're innocent.

It's time to ask Judges (and all candidates) how they feel about mass surveillance and warrantless searches or potential violations of the 4th. With elections coming, this is such an important topic.

This bill is a hot mess! Even if you support or are against ranked choice voting methods, there's garbage in there to crush competition and levy fines for collecting signatures(which all parties do to get the work done in the signature collection process).

FLOCK cameras do not keep you safe and add to the surveillance state. It is foolish to think someone can sell you safety by spying on you.

These cameras collect data and build out profiles on each driver captured.

This is an extra cost and strips away individual privacy of residents and anyone else who has shared access to the property, like the Sail Club.
