Have you ever herd the story of how NC State University’s dairy farm got its start? 🐄📚

The first chapter starts hundreds of miles away in New York. Wilmington, NC native and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduate William Rand Kenan Jr. purchased his first family Jersey, Daisy, there in 1913. His interest in the breed grew from there, eventually leading him to establish Randleigh Dairy, a 470-acre farm dedicated to Jersey cattle, dairy research and innovation.

After Kenan passed away in 1965, he donated Randleigh Dairy to the UNC System. The following year, 37 cows and 41 heifers from his herd made the journey to NC State, bringing the Randleigh legacy back to his home state.

That legacy is still moo-ving forward today. Every Jersey in our herd is a direct descendant of those original Randleigh Jerseys! 🐮

We welcomed NASA astronaut and three-time NC State alumna Christina Koch back to campus today, and Chancellor Kevin Howell marked the occasion by unveiling a new, limited-edition Howling Cow ice cream flavor: Howl at the Moon.

A Howling Cow homecoming for NASA astronaut and NC State graduate Christina Koch? We're howling at the moon for it. 🍦🌖

Howl at the Moon, a new, limited-edition Howling Cow ice cream flavor, has a cheesecake base with blueberry and raspberry swirls and pieces of graham cracker pie crust. This out-of-this-world flavor was announced by Chancellor Kevin Howell today at Koch's homecoming event celebrating her record-breaking trip around the moon.

Howl at the Moon will be available for a limited time at Talley Student Union and the Howling Cow Dairy Education Center and Creamery, while supplies last.

Back to the ABCs, Howling Cow edition: A is for Agriculture. B is for Bovine. C is for cow-to-cone. 🐮🍦

Back-to-school season is the perfect time to bring your lesson plans to life at the Randleigh Dairy Heritage Museum and NC State University Dairy Farm.

Students can see dairy education in action as they explore how a typical North Carolina dairy operates, how cows are cared for and produce milk, and how that milk makes its way from the farm to familiar favorites like Howling Cow ice cream. 🍦
