This was a comment I shared on a LinkedIn post that I’ve decided to share publicly…

Public education is doing exactly what the establishment wants…ensuring that Blacks in Amerikkka are a permanent underclass.

What we need is a replicable Black Independent School model akin to the Rosenwald and Freedom Schools of the past…created by us for us.

These schools will partner with HBCUs and Ivy League institutions throughout the nation to create foundational experiences that propel our scholars towards a purpose driven life.

These scholars will be prepared to shape the future of their communities at the local, state, federal, and global levels.

It’s the only way forward for our children. I’m developing the model now. I’ve started 2 charter schools but the government oversight remains a problem.

School vouchers for K-12/K-8, Black Private Schools that are safe and affirming with college, career, and Entrepreneurship pathways are the solution to our problems.

Electives and College & Career & Entrepreneurship Seminars like: AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination College Prep Courses), Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Latin, Public Speaking & Debate, Dance Appreciation, Music Appreciation, Band/Orchestra, Lessons in Leadership, and Black Achievements & History, Stating Your Own Business Now, Networking & Marketing.

The future for black students who attend these schools will be limitless.

We plan to open our first school in Northeast Raleigh, NC in August 2026.

Just treat teachers better and pay them a living wage that respects the hard work they do every day.

Even during teacher shortages, and with bad behavior from students increasing, leaders are still treating teachers poorly and expecting them to stay.

I am thinking of my former teacher, Mr. Robert Copeland, as I write a poem titled "Thank you, Mr. Copeland" to thank him for inspiring me to become a history teacher.

Never underestimate the power of a caring teacher to impact the rest of a student's life.

Now what? Are we going to sit back and watch GOP lawmakers continue to destroy NC public education while ensuring that their children and grandchildren have private and charter “school choice?”

As long as we don’t speak up and vote folks out, they will continue dismantle public education. NC public school teachers have been pimp slapped again and again by NC lawmakers. I’m personally witnessing this attrition. We are losing great teachers.

We had better speak up before it’s too late.

North Carolina’s teacher turnover rate has soared by 47%, with 1 in 9 educators having left the profession, according to the newest state report.

A report being presented Wednesday to the State Board of Education shows a teacher “attrition rate” of 11.5% between March 2022 and March 2023. That means that 10,376 of the state’s 90,638 teachers left the profession in that time period.

The State of the Teaching Profession in North Carolina report shows nearly 3,100 more teachers quit than the prior year. The attrition rose rose 47%, up from 7.78% in the prior report.

One in 9 teachers left the profession between March 2022 and March 2023. The report shows the continuing challenges NC’s public schools face finding enough educators.

This book is a must read for Black educators as a reminder of the absolute importance of our presence in public schools today. Now, as much as ever before, we need teachers who are armed with this knowledge to fight the good fight for “our” children while being confronted by a system that seeks to miseducate them. There is still so much work to be done.
