👋 Hi!

I hope y'all are having a great summer!

I've spent more than 25 years teaching, training, coaching, and encouraging learners of all ages, and I still believe one of the greatest adventures in life is watching someone discover what they're capable of.

I also have a master's degree in Christian Education and Biblical Counseling, a passion for learning, and a ridiculously cute dog (he's a Coton de Tulear) who occasionally thinks he's part of the tutoring team. 🐶

Today, I have the privilege of leading a small but incredible team of educators who care deeply about students. They aren't just knowledgeable—they're kind, encouraging, and consistently earn five-star reviews from the families we serve.

Together, we provide personalized online tutoring and academic coaching for students in grades 4–12, college, and adults.

How do you get your teen talking when all you get is the side-eye over a phone?

If you are frustrated, asking questions, and wondering how to reach your teen, you are not alone. You are really not alone. According to Pew Research Center, about 4 in 10 parents and teens regularly argue about how much time teens spend on their phones.

Over the years, I've had the privilege of working with some amazingly dedicated people doing their best to support those around them:

• Students
• Parents
• Teachers
• Schools & Administrators
• Churches & Ministry Leaders
• Businesses & Teams

Although their roles are different, they have something in common. They're trying to help people in a culture that often rewards destructive communication, values engaging media over meaningful conversations, and constantly competes for our attention.

I've watched teachers work long hours, parents search for the right words, and leaders work to build healthier relationships. After graduating with my degree in Christian Education and Biblical Counseling, I've spent years reading, researching, and organizing practical tools, cognitive shortcuts, and the best ideas I know into something people can actually remember and use when conversations become difficult.

I'm excited to launch the first Socratic Repair™ coaching group.

The pilot is designed especially for parents and their K–12 students who care deeply about one another but are tired of repeating the same difficult patterns.

I've intentionally kept the pilot at an affordable group rate because I want these tools to be accessible.

We are a small company, so our posts are infrequent, but today - I wanted to flip the script.

One of the things I love about my job is that I get to work with parents who are both thoughtful and deliberate about how they support their children.

Recently, one of our tutors did an amazing job just reaching out and trying to troubleshoot some problems for two students. She spent time and energy reading through choices and communicating thoughtfully - so I was very grateful for her.

But then, the parent came back, recognized her time and wanted to give her something extra.

Now, those are two sides of a rare coin. And I got to be in the middle. I feel both fortunate to have folks who math (which is something that I do not do) and parents who care.

I hope this little example serves as a reminder to you, too. In small ways and big ways - we can light up our corners

Snow days have a way of opening the doors to fun!❄️

When I was quite small, I remember a snowstorm unlike any I had seen in my short years. I was living in the D.C. area, and my sister and I watched the snow falling… and waited. And waited. And waited.

After a still, quiet night of steadily falling snow, we ventured out into the snow-blinding brightness of the next day. My father built us an igloo with a path. It was magical to crawl through a cold little tunnel into a domed igloo outside, with an arched door. My dad took pictures of two very happy little faces.

Today, I can’t help but think of days like that. And even though my own kids are grown, it still delights me to realize that some of the children around me here in Raleigh may be seeing a big snowfall for the very first time — especially with tomorrow’s predicted accumulation.

As an educator and coach, I stayed up last night creating a super fun Snow Day Learning Guide, filled with quotes, discussion starters, book suggestions, and gentle ideas for leaning into snow-day curiosity. It’s included in a new blog post called “Snow Days Open Doors,” along with lots of cozy, wintry inspiration.

So, this past weekend I celebrated something special with family, friends, and schoolmates - I finally graduated with my MA In Christian Education and Biblical Counseling from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

I did it -

- after my kids were grown...
- after re-inventing my career
- while working full time

At Nelson Notes, we believe that everyone can learn, improve, and grow. One of the things we love doing is walking beside others to help them change "I cant's" into "I can's"!

We don't just teach it, and coach it, and counsel it - we live it:

- You are never too old, too young, or “starting too late” to begin again.

- You are never too anxious, too depressed, too overwhelmed, or too embarrassed by past mistakes to believe you can make a positive choice today.

- You are never too distracted or too disrupted to take one small step toward something new.

- AND, you are never beyond redemption because Jesus Christ is still making all things new, this Christmas season and beyond.
