Why writing by hand beats typing for thinking and learning Researchers are learning that handwriting engages the brain in ways typing can't match, raising questions about the costs of ditching this age-old practice, especially for kids.

Your Waldorf kid comes home with knitting needles and yarn. Your first thought? β€œWait, is this school or grandma’s house?” πŸ˜„
But there’s a brilliant reason behind it. Knitting crosses the body’s midline, coordinating both hands in alternating patterns β€” the same neurological integration that supports reading and writing.
Throw in focus, patience, and the pride of making something real… and it’s one of the best things a young child can do.
Not old-fashioned. Just ahead of its time. 🧢

What The U.S. Can Learn From Finland, Where School Starts At Age 7 05/03/2026

Did you know that two of the most talked-about approaches to childhood education both agree on one big thing β€” kids shouldn’t start formal academics too early?
Waldorf schools have long held that children aren’t ready for reading and writing instruction until around age 6–7, prioritizing imaginative play, art, and movement in the early years instead.
Finland β€” consistently ranked among the world’s top education systems β€” doesn’t start compulsory school until age 7. Before that, it’s all about play-based learning and letting kids be kids.
Both approaches trust that a strong, unhurried foundation leads to better long-term outcomes β€” academically and emotionally.
Makes you wonder: what’s the rush? 🌱

What The U.S. Can Learn From Finland, Where School Starts At Age 7 Finland, a country the size of Minnesota, beats the U.S. in math, reading and science. The country's top education official says investing in preschool and day care is key.

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ’ͺ WE DID IT β€” MUD AND ALL! πŸ’ͺπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

This past weekend, the Raleigh Day School crew laced up (and promptly got them destroyed πŸ˜„) at the Mud Girl Run in Lucama, NC β€” and WOW, what an incredible experience!

From crawling through obstacles to cheering each other across the finish line, our team showed up and showed OUT. There is something truly magical about watching these students lift each other up β€” literally and figuratively β€” through every muddy hill and splash zone along the way.

Events like the Mud Girl Run are so much more than a race. They are a reminder of what we are capable of when we step outside our comfort zones together. They build:

πŸ’› Team unity β€” because no one crosses a mud pit alone
πŸ’ͺ Resilience β€” pushing through when it gets tough (and muddy!)
πŸ™Œ Trust β€” leaning on your teammates when the obstacles get real
πŸŽ‰ Community β€” cheering for women you just met like you've known them forever

We are so proud of every single student who represented Raleigh Day School on that course. You were muddy, tired, and absolutely unstoppable.

Here's to the next adventure β€” who's in? πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

Our 3rd and 4th grades visited Carolina Sunshine Alpaca Farm! πŸ¦™ Students enjoyed a hands-on tour learning how alpacas are cared for, shorn, and how their fiber becomes the roving and yarn used in the students’ own handwork projects. In Waldorf Education, animal studies serve as a beautiful bridge β€” connecting early imaginative learning to a deeper, more concrete relationship with the natural world. This visit brought that philosophy to life, giving students a first-hand look at the craft and care behind the materials they work with every day. πŸ‘βœ¨

The rest of the world needs to take note. This is something we have been doing all along! Please visit us at RaleighDaySchool.org and schedule a tour today!

Sweden is reportedly adjusting its approach to education by reducing the emphasis on screens and digital tools in classrooms and reintroducing more traditional learning methods such as books, handwriting, and printed materials. This shift reflects growing discussion among educators and researchers about the role of technology in early education. While digital tools can offer access to information and interactive learning, concerns have been raised about attention span, reading depth, and over reliance on screens among younger students.

Handwriting and reading physical books are believed to support memory retention and cognitive development in different ways compared to typing or screen based learning. Some educators argue that writing by hand helps students process information more deeply and improves focus.

The move does not mean removing technology entirely, but rather finding a balance between digital learning and traditional methods. Schools are exploring how to integrate both approaches in a way that supports different learning needs and developmental stages.

Experts note that education systems around the world are still adapting to rapid technological change. There is ongoing research into how screen exposure affects learning outcomes, especially in early childhood education. The key idea is simple. Education is evolving, and countries are testing different methods to find what best supports learning, attention, and cognitive development. A balanced approach between digital tools and traditional practices may help create a more effective learning environment for students in the long term across modern classrooms globally today.
